Re: Mids Are The SHIZZNAT!!!

The whole idea is to get the EQ on the amp sounding as rich and full as possible. Some people have commented on the way I dial in an amp. When Scott F came to my rehearsal studio, he thought it was funny how I quickly jump around the knobs, twiddling them real fast to find their sweet spot. I almost do it without looking, just listening, then I usually notice that the knobs are a little different than I might have them set, just by looking.

Mids give all the growl. Without them, you've just got a big wash of white noise.
Anytime I see a band with that "scooped" Rectifier, Triple X, or Valvestate tone, I almost start dry heaving. Those are the amps that NEED mids, so it's crazy to turn down the midrange. You can always tell when a player needs mids, when they go to a solo tone and it sounds like a barrage of high pitched noises peeking out from the rhythm section.

What frequency bands do you consider to be mids? I've always considered them to be from around 250hz to about 800hz...

that kinda fits into what i need. I don't play drop tuned nu-metal but I need something that along with reverb and delay can create a massive wall of sound.

My overdrive I dial up quite a bit of mids on I guess

YES!!! I have been saying this for years! I always have my mids at about 8 to 10, rips right through the mix live. I hope this "scooped mids = Metal tone" idea will start to fade away and more Metal bands will start getting good tone with mids instead of the fuzzy static that's become the norm in Metal.

Cheers,

CJ

Gear, that is why I am surprised you love the C-5 so much. I tried and tried but still couldn't get the mids I wanted and I plyed it through a number of amps including some Marshalls. The problem is that I don't like when the amps mids are cranked. I like to get some mids from the guitar/pickups.
