Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

Hey guys, I'm gunna keep this nice and short.

Basically a friend of mine is selling his BOSS GE-7 and I've been lookin' at these awhile back, mostly as a little solo boost. I don't scoop my mids but live its just nice to have that extra bit of cut during the solo you know?

So now my chain goes Guitar>Crybaby>BOSS CH-1 chorus>amp

I have an efects loop but all this is infront of the amp. Wheres the best place to put the GE-7?

Last in line of effects if playing clean, in effects loop if using amp's distortion.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

Awsome thanks! I was goign to experiment of course but I wanted a good guideline first! I'm going to try the loop and right before my amp.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

I'm afraid I like the oposite of what's in the little Boss manual. If you'd put an EQ in front of the thing that is distorting (either an amp or another pedal) you are changing the tone that will get distorted.
The tone-control or EQ on pedals and amps are almost always after the distorting of your signal took place.

I would advise against cutting the mids for a solo. :) Rather cutt bass slightly and boost mids, highs and overall volume just a bit. This should give you both more distortion and more volume. With the extra mids and highs, it will hilight your guitar over the rest in the mix without the bass farting out or pushing everything else aside.

The above only applies if you have an amp with enough headroom left for more volume when a boost is engaged.

Just my two cents, have fun experimenting ! And while you're at it, give the chorus a try in the loop of your amp, you might like that. :)

Thanks! And yeah, I don't scoop my mids...why would I for a solo? hahaha

I like the chorus infront, I'll experiment with the GE-7 wherever though. Love to add more but I got to go for surgery...

i love using the GE7 but the extra noise that comes with it is anollying sometimes.... but crank up the lows a little and it can turn a small amp into a stack like sound.... i have tried them for a solo boost and i like them infront of the amp... kind of like a an OD as the amp just turns it into slightly more distortion really.... no real volume boost when you have the gain cranked

There is a mod for this made by Tonejam called the Sniper mod which makes the pedal quiet. I vaguely remember John Spina performing this mod for another forumite.

You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten.
You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all
the way up, you're on ten on your guitar ..

Where can you go from there ? Where ?

Nowhere.
Exactly.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

Nowhere. don't buy it. Pedal eqs are tonesuckers, even when used as a solo boost. Look into a clean boost/od instead.

And think about offing that chorus while you're at it. Outside of Police covers, no good can come from chorus.

Someone doesn't like pedals! hahaa

I'm actually getting it Saterday, its a done deal. Sorry to dissapoint Hot Grits.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

Me? -I love pedals. Just not eqs and choruses. Choruses in particular should be banned under the Geneva Convention.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

hahahahaha, may I ask why you don't like it?

Well if it makes you feel better, I have a wah too.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

EQs: never found one that didn't do awful things to my tone. On paper, they sound like a good idea, but in practice, they're guaranteed weenie-tone.

Chorus: I dunno. Perhaps it's genetic. But whenever I hear chorus, I just think 'bad stuck in the 80s top 40 band guitarist'. Clean or dirty.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

i've found the GE-7 to operate quietly when placed in the FX loop. why that is, i couldn't tell you. and of course it will sound best when used sparingly.

but i'd definitely recommend experimenting and finding where is sounds best in the signal chain in your rig. there isn't really a right or wrong place to put it, you just gotta find where it sounds best.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

I use one of these, mainly to replace the low end I lose when using the SD-1 OD pedal. I plan on having the SD-1 modded, at which time I'll prolly use it to boost mids for leads. I run the pedal after the OD pedal to kinda reshape the OD's treatment of the tone.

FWIW - I also use the CH-1 and dig it. I use it to widen my sound in a stereo Marshall setup. People have their own opinions on things, I personally like a bit of chorus on my clean, picked out stuff, although I'm using this more as a Stereo widener. For a Jangly kind of chorus effect, I'm using the Detune setting on a Whammy pedal, actually, it's quite nice on clean stuff.

But go by your own ears, not what anyone on hear says. Tone is a very individual thing, what sucks for some may rule for others. For what you're doing, though, I recommend placing it just before your Chorus pedal.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

Well I got the EQ, its goign to work great for a lead boost like I planned! Does add noise of course, I needed to buy a noise gate anyways so it didn't bother me much.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

I would keep the EQ right between the wah and the chorus. But you are free to experiment a little. I love EQ pedals. You can do awesome things with it. You can focus on and filter out some noises and hums, clean boost, acoustic simulation, pickup simulation (SC/HB), etc. I've been messing with my graphic and parametric EQs a lot lately.

Re: Might be getting an EQ soon, where to put in chain?

I'd put the chorus in the loop and put the EQ right before the amp input, since you'll be using it for boost.

Otherwise I always put an EQ in the loop.
