Mincer: Chapman Stick Alert

Re: Mincer: Chapman Stick Alert

That's expensive for a Stick Bass, which is essentially a tap style bass...more than the normal Stick or Grand Stick. The difference is the range, and the fact that the Stick Bass has the lowest string where you would expect, not in the middle of the fretboard. I've played a purple heart Grand Stick before (12 strings), but man, nothing that you learn on guitar is remotely applicable- it is like learning french horn.

If I had the $$ to invest in a Stick, my pick would be the super cool N/S Stick. Another cool option is the German-made Touch Guitar.

$2400 just for a neck?!

Ha! But more recent touch-based instruments have a body, too. That way you can pluck or slap or pick on them, which is just about impossible on a real Stick.

Very nice instruments; but way out of my league price wise. :)

I can't even look at guitars like that, I feel poor XD

Tony is a strange Stick player. What an amazing talent! But one of the things he rarely does, is play true polyphonic parts, like a piano.

Strange? How so? He's the most accomplished, well known, and influential Stickist I can think of. And as for not playing true polyphonic parts, so what?

Oh, I am a huge fan. He's a really nice guy in person, too. His playing isn't very indicative of most people who play the Stick more like a piano. Tony does excellent bass parts with occasional melodies. His voice on the instrument is absolutely unique. But he is a strange example of the average Stick player, even if he is the most well-known. It just isn't how many people approach that instrument. I am all for finding your own way.

YES! I saw him play at the Ann Arbor Art Fair, in Michigan, one summer. His location relative to the rest of the event was on the outer edge, and so unfortunately he got less traffic his way. It was so amazing watching him play! His CD's were the only thing I bought there that day. :D

Yeah, that guy is really wonderful. Another person I dig is Trey Gunn, who plays another touch guitar called a Warr.

Very cool, my regular guitar style has a lot of Bob Culberson in it, it started as a way to get concurrent piano passages into my music.
