Mini Hum suggestions for a LP deluxe ?

Toying with the idea of replacing the bridge pickup in my new LP deluxe. Not too many choices out there. 3 Duncans and 2 Dimarzios is all I see. I'm looking for a slightly hotter than vintage bridge tone with highs a bit thicker. Probably would leave the neck stock, unless the duncan or dimarzio vintage neck replacement is a bit more open sounding with more top.

Also, was wondering if rotating the Pickup 180 degrees might take a little of the edge off at the bridge. Would put the exposed screws just a bit farther away from the bridge. Anyone tried this ?

Opinions or experiences ?

Thanks in advance.

What I would do is go with Duncan P-90's. Go with one of the hotter versions. I had an original '69 Gold Top Deluxe years ago and foolishly routed it out for full size humbuckers because I hated the original mini-hums. Sounded great, though. The P-90's should fit right in.

Jeff

p.s. I don't think that rotating the pup will help appreciably IMO.

I was interested in mini hums too but I don't think there are many folks out there with that config so don't expect oodles of replies

I'm just waiting for a set of Gibson mini hums to arrive that I'm gonna throw in my Gretsch

Re: Mini Hum suggestions for a LP deluxe ?

I should have stated that "hum-free" is a requirement. So unless it's a stack, a lace, or something similar, P90's aren't for me. Love the tone, but can't live with the hum.

Do you know what the specs of your current mini's are?

JUST going by SD's "Tone Chart", the SM-2 bridge has slightly
more mids and much greater output which may address
fattening up the highs and give you something hotter.

Cheers, Will.

I think the SM-3 "Seymourized" is probably what you're looking for. I had one in my '76 LP Deluxe and it sounded great! I'm a real high output pickup fan though so I took it out and replaced it with a Dimarzio DLX Plus and it sounded, well, like a Dimarzio! I don't like it! I've got a Bill Lawrence L-550 from the late 70's I got off of Ebay to try when I get time, and the right screws-I'm missing the right hardware.........I think I'd probably like the Duncan SM-2, being a higher output pickup with ceramic magnet which I tend to like!

Mini's are so cool!

the LP i built recently has a set of the GFS mini humbuckers in her..and i have to say they are really impressive. might be worth checking out

That's a really good suggestion, and a pretty cheap experiment. 've used some GFS pickups in the past and been pleased. Didn't know they made minis. Which model did you use ? Also, how did you deal with the pickup bezel/surround being permanently attached to the pickup ?(assuming your guitar was configured like a regular LP deluxe). Do the screws that come with the GFS pickups come with the same thread as the mounting plate in the deluxes ? That whole mounting scheme looks to be a pain when swapping pickups. I'll definitely at least have to buy some more bezels/mounting rings, because the originals aren't coming of off the pickups without cutting the screws off, and I don't wanna go there.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Mini Hum suggestions for a LP deluxe ?

i used the ones in the link i posted. the fat PAF alnico V model. as for the mounting, i cut my own mounting rings from black cherry wood and the attached them to the body. Ive no idea how the deluxes are mounted.

Nice guitar scottish!

What do the mini toggles do? and how usefull sre the tones?

I've got a matched pair of SM-3's and still a little confused
about the usefullness of splitting and parallel tones.

Cheers, Will.

Re: Mini Hum suggestions for a LP deluxe ?

the mini toggles just switch current flow from series to parallel within each pickup. basically when parallel it sounds more single coil and vice versa. to be honest, with these pups it doesnt make a lot of difference. i designed it that way though because i was originally going to use full humbuckers. thats also why i had to cut my own mounting rings. it routed for a humbucker under there so the regular mini mounting ring wouldnt cover up the route
