How is it being mounted??
You could get away with 20mm in some cases, with maybe a small amount extra depth for the screws.

Depth of ring??
Type of ring?? (les paul deluxe type ring?, firebird flat ring? more typical humbucker ring??)
Guitar type and setup?? ( An archtop with an elevated fretboard will need a different rout than a Les paul with the fretboard on the body, which is different to a Fender etc etc).


Essentially you need to find the height of the strings over the body unfretted and allow for the top of the pickup to be maybe 1/4" below that at maximum.

Lol more details would be more helpful.

It's going into a Tele mounted in a firebird flat ring.

Yep.....in that case you would need the full depth of the pickup as your rout. If you do a deeper section for the legs you can have less for the middle area.
