Mini-Humbuckers vs. Humbuckers

Hey,
Other than the obvious fact that the Mini-Humbucker is smaller, what are the differences in sound? Closer to like a P-90? I have seen a Les Paul with a couple of Mini-Humbuckers in the Relient K...Be my escape video.

Will they make the Les Paul less Muddy sounding? Someone told me that Les Pauls are more for less gain settings and stuff. I play stuff with a lot of gain so will the Mini-Humbuckers handle that?

The original minihumbuckers are very clear sounding, somewhat more like a Fender type of tone. The tone is great for the neck position, but you would want a higher output version like an SM2 or SM3 for the bridge for high gain stuff.

I used to own a 2002 Les Paul Deluxe. The minis were really great. Very articulate and punchy. They not quite as "big" sounding as the full size hummers; but just as warm. Les Paul himself prefers them to the fullsize hummers.

As Butch said they are very articulate and sweet sounding. They sound great in the neck, and bridge as well. I've never had gain problems when I've used them. My dad's 69LP has mini's and they are the cleanest sounding buckers you can imagine. Very little to no mud.

you could get a custom shop pickup with a mini in a regular humbucking cover.

I wonder how the minibuckers would sound in a Les Paul body? I've played Firebird V and VIIs with them and they sound amazing, but never a LP...

Whoever said Les Pauls are more for low gain stuff was on crack. Les Pauls are one of the best guitars for in-your-face hard rock licks. While they may sound good with minibuckers, I think they sound just absolutely gorgeous with regular humbuckers. Warm, lush, and full, combined with some heavy distortion gives you a defining tone for rock music.

well actually when the les paul was first conceived distortion was still in it's infant stages and was not intended for that at all. It was made the way it is for it's clean sound.

It's the players that came along 20 years later that made it famous for thick distorted tones.

Plus I LOVE mini humbuckers. I've got a Gibson Nighthawk that was discontinued years ago, you can find them on ebay for pretty decent prices most of the time. It's not at all like an LP, but has a mini humbucker neck.

I had an old 70's LP dlx, and a newer MF LP deluxe.

The older minis were very clear and pretty low output wise. At the time I didn't really care for them (as I was into massive gain)

I'm still pissed off I sent the recent Deluxe back...it was one of the 2 best LP's I've had tone-wise...it would chunk, but with clarity..VERY sweet clean or under high gain....neck or bridge.... it just dripped tone.

O yeah totally, i'm not disputing that. The cleans are gorgeous, I was just emphasizing its distortion qualities in my last post. I don't have enough good things to say about my Les Paul. The cleans are the best i've ever heard, and the distortion absolutely rocks!!!

mini hums are bright clear and still stay warmer and pretty fat. I love them.

not at all, completely different animal. Although...kind of similar. The cool rails are my favorite. Strat sized humbuckers end up sounding more like fat single coils with more sustain and higher output.

I SO wish I had mini hums in my Epiphone 335. Thing is, the Riviera is WAY more expensive. Ideally I would have liked a nimi in a full humbucker cover, but that was just too much money - so I've gone for a '59 instead.
