Mini practice tube amps for metal?

So right now I have a Randall RVC combo which is pretty much the same as the RD5C. Overall, I like it, but I just got myself an Orange PPC112, and I want to trade my RVC for a head. I can hook up the RVC to the cab for now (which makes it sound better), but I kinda want the portability of a head so that I can take out my mini rig more comfortably and jam with a friend who has a similar mini rig setup.

I'm looking into the Randall RD1H and the Blackstar HT-1 Metal and regular heads. I know the RD series, and I know they're decent, but I'm also curious about the Blackstar stuff. Maybe the Bassbreaker 007, but that'd be stretching the budget a little.

Is there anything else in the price range that I should look at? I don't really need versatility. I don't play much cleans. I just want a spanking high-gain tone.

Thanks. :)

The Bantamp Zombie looks interesting!

The 6505MH is a bit out of my budget. :(

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

Zombie rocks for $160. One trick pony but that pony is made of metal. Surprising volume output also, through a 2-12.

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

If it's only for home use, forget about tubes (or at least don't limit yourself to tubes).

I own 5 great tube amps (including a dual-recto) and you know what? When I need to be as quiet as possible without going for headphones, I grab my little Hotone HeartAttack and use it through my 2x12... it's 5w ss and sounds incredible. Cheap to boot too... seriously, get one.

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

That Hotone seems interesting as well!

Thanks for the replies, dudes.

Anyone have experience with the Blackstar HT Metal series?

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

Is it Ho' Tone or Hot One?

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

According to a FAQ on their website, it's HOT TONE.

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

How are those at lower volumes?

The RD1H is definitely one of my top runners. I'd go for the head rather than the combo, though.

I have the combo for my 16 years old son and I like very much its sound/tone, when he plays metal. However, it doesn't have clean options.

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

I have the combo version of the RD5 myself. Yeah, it's great when hooked up to a bigger cab. I swapped out the speaker in mine for a G10 Greenback, and while it did improve it, I still don't like it as much as with a good cab, hence why I want the head. :)

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

I was using a ss Hughes and Kettner Blue 30 for practice. Sounded pretty good. Mostlly use a zoom 505 with headphones for convenience and quiet usage, these days.
Most of the time I play, the wife and kids are sleeping. So, need silent practice. I am definately watching this thread and keeping my eyes open for other options.

There are different/better-sounding headphone options, if that's something you're interested in.

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

Isn't that H&K a combo? I'm kinda trying to stay away from combos because I wanna use my new 1x12. :)

Re: Mini practice tube amps for metal?

So... has anyone tried the Blackstar HT-1 or HT-1 Metal? I'm really curious about those. It seems like everyone is sold out, though. They must be that good, lol.

Yeah, headphones and convenience are major needs...the 505 is not a great option, but it is convenient.

Yeah, the H+Ks I have are combos..
