Minihumbucker in a Strat... :)

Andrew Lamprecht

Minion of One
What would a mini humbucker sound like in the neck position of my strat?

(maple neck, alder body)

maybe something easier would be a jazz or a humbucker from hell. The 59 neck is just too fat I guess. I want something I could chord with....

Depends which mini but they can sound really good if you choose the right one. I've been using Lollar Firebird necks, which are a low wind mini (6k ish with standard ga wire) and stealth minis that a local winder in nashville made me that fit under a normal size cover. They sound like a cross between a single and a bucker, articulate like a single but fatter. If you go with a higher wind they'll start to sound more like a regular humbucker. Minis have a tighter magnetic field than a full sized bucker, not quite as tight as a single but it gives them that in-between flavor.

mini's and fb pups sound great in the neck of fender style guitars. the antiquity II variety of both sound wonderful. the fb type are more aggrssive than the lp dlx style. i use the fb in the neck of my tele and the mini in a strat

I think I want to try this... I love the 59B and I have liked the 59N before but in this guitar it just doesnt do anything for me....

Isn't this what Tom Anderson is doing these days? Does he wind them any differently to get them to sound more like single coils?

Re: Minihumbucker in a Strat... :)

If you wind a mini-bucker & a firebird with same number of turns & same size wire (these use the same bobbins ,but because of the difference in design) the firebird will be brighter ,tighter & sound more like a single coil

Lower the neck pickup rather low but raise the poles up a tad...if that's still too much low end then mag swap that bad boy...an a4 will sound mostly like it does now but with the low end trimmed up...an a2 will shift the eq of the pickup a fair bit more and you might or might not like it but it will clean up the low end and is worth a shot

Ever since I seen Joe Walsh play that Strat he's got that has just the mini in the bridge, I've always wanted to try it. I've just never gotten around to it. Too many cool ideas to use and not enough room or money to house all the guitars for them.

Just picking up on that thought and taking it off on a slight tangent. I wonder how close a mini and one of the PRS 'Narrowfield' pups might be. It seems that they are both operating out of the same 'more focused' footprint, though probably with rather different thinking regarding wire, magnets and so on. Has any one tried both and compared them?

... the neck pickup sounds great too except when you start messing with the lower registers of the guitar....

Welcome to my world. Thats why I started using custom minis that fit under regular sized covers and Lollar firebirds with ring adapters, as well as some unusually wound full sized neck pups. Also messing around with 1M pots on the neck pickups where I have a separate neck volume to play with.

'59ns and Jazz'ns are wonderful pickups clean, I especially love the '59n for clean jazz tones. Under gain though, that low register just turns to mush.
