I've got two (minor) issues with this song that are really driving me crazy. First, when I play those last 4 notes in bold, I'm having a lot of trouble preventing that dissonant tone you get when the notes bleed into each other. Also, whenever I reach for that first note in the second progression (in bold), it always sounds rushed and sloppy. I've tried playing with 3 and 4 fingers, and I still have issues.

Do you know anyone else that can play it? If so ask them how they play it.

hmm... if i had my wires that i freakin left at church :smack:

but, i played that a few weeks ago and i don't think i've had a problem...

i use my 5th and 4th finger to play the 15 & 14 frets on the high e string.

Been years since I played that one !! I keep my Index finger on the 12th
fret D & G strings the whole time and play the lick w/t my middle & ring
finger. I used to get dizzy playing that lick, And the bass player knew it !
He'd make me go a few bars longer B4 he came in. :saeek: S.O.B.!!
Just keep at it untill it gets more fluid. It's a pretty simple lick ,But it
has to flow ( That's the tricky part) Don't try to force it. It will iron
itself out. (Try to not get dizzy playing it :laugh2: )

I jam on this tune very often. I use straight fingers to play the opening riff - Eric Clapton style. Use fingers 1, 2, 3. There's also other similar riffs on the chorus. And the solo is harmonic-minoresque, wah heaven with my LP

Can you explain this in more detail? I get the 3 fingers part. Do I not bend my fingers at all?

hammer the last 4 notes on the b string

check to see if your guitar is properly intonated. And/or use a tuner to see if you are pressing the strings too hard.

I've also noticed that when I use too much distortion I get that more often.

Hope that helps. :dunno:

OK mrid I gave it a shot.. a very quick one. The recording is not that great. I have not heard this song for a while so I don't know if I picked it out right. I followed your tab at first then changed it a little. I didn't use a pick, I just hammered away :laugh2:

Slash said the intro to SCOM was originally a finger exercise/ warm-up he used.

The way I'd play it would be the following:

keep your 1st (index?) finger on the 12th fret, 3rd on the 14 and 4th on the 15th. You don't need to move them at all. For the two last notes, take the higher one with the middle part of your third finger, not the tip. Got it?

u also have to remember to either tune ur guitar a half step down or play it 1 fret down

Re: Minor problem with "Sweet Child 'O Mine" that's really bugging me

You kinda have to lift your fingers up so they mute the string. Gi've me about a year till I find the digital camera and I'll post a vid of what I mean...

Re: Minor problem with "Sweet Child 'O Mine" that's really bugging me

I use my ring and pinky fingers to fret both the 14 and 15 notes on the high E at the same time. Then I use my middle finger to play the 14 note on the G. I had the same problem you're having when I was first learning this, but if I play it this way it sounds correct to my ears. As others have mentioned, make sure your guitar is properly intonated and that you're tuning down a half step.

for that part, i use my ring finger on the A on the G string, and pinky on the notes on the E string.

let me see if i can explain how i play it...ok ring finger stays put flat on d-e at all times on the 12th fret and never moves...then all 14th fret notes are played with my middle finger and 15th fret with my ring finger. also when i go to play one of the 14th or 15th fret notes i "bar" all the strings below it with that finger (flat finger as mentioned by others) don't try and use your finger tips to play each note just bar them with your finger, it makes it much easier and fluid that way. i hope that helps a bit, it's a bit hard to type out,and so much easier to show someone.
