Minor Scale Box Shapes

Re: Minor Scale Box Shapes

I always start people off on the major scales first and E is as good a place as any. Once you can play through all the modes of E major, F major, F# major, ect. you'll already have the scale patterns for dom7, min7, min7b13, minb9b13, ect and then all you have to do transpose the patterns over the tonality you are looking for. The circle of fifths helps to decode some of that for you and knowing the sharps or flats for any key signature doesn't hurt either.

Where it gets a little trickier is when you have non-related tones thrown in as in the case of augmented chords or where a leading tone has been created in minor keys to create a stronger resolution when the harmony moves from the V to the I but once you get a grasp of the "inside" tonalities and the patterns involved, moving outside the harmonic structure is much easier because you already understand where you are and where you need to get back to fully.

Like I said, I'll try to find you a copy here of all the majors and modes and I'll forward it to you. Kick me in the butt if you don't get it in a day or two.

Hey, I don't liek to push people for stuff but you said "Kick me in the butt if you don't get it in a day or two" so here I am...kicking your butt. I will send you a PM tomorrow because I have one more question/comment.

Re: Minor Scale Box Shapes

boxes are good.
if you can join them up, great!
but aswell as that, learn said scale along one string.
if you can solo on one string from 0 to 22(or 24) on each stri ng then youl find your boxes redundant.
also in doing this you can develope nice ways of mooving along strings, box playing is realy baad for that.
i found when i learned to solo on one string i could slide up and down it so with one finger just as fast as id normaly play. it made me rethink my aproach and now im loving the benifits.
try it
itl take a good few hours before you get the hang of it
then your off!

Sorry for the delay.
