Re: Minor Scale Box Shapes
I always start people off on the major scales first and E is as good a place as any. Once you can play through all the modes of E major, F major, F# major, ect. you'll already have the scale patterns for dom7, min7, min7b13, minb9b13, ect and then all you have to do transpose the patterns over the tonality you are looking for. The circle of fifths helps to decode some of that for you and knowing the sharps or flats for any key signature doesn't hurt either.
Where it gets a little trickier is when you have non-related tones thrown in as in the case of augmented chords or where a leading tone has been created in minor keys to create a stronger resolution when the harmony moves from the V to the I but once you get a grasp of the "inside" tonalities and the patterns involved, moving outside the harmonic structure is much easier because you already understand where you are and where you need to get back to fully.
Like I said, I'll try to find you a copy here of all the majors and modes and I'll forward it to you. Kick me in the butt if you don't get it in a day or two.
