Minwax Wipe on Poly

I will eventually get the finish that I seek, but I must say, wet sanding the Min Wax is a real PITA.

It is a PITA, but it yields a great finish! Just keep it up, the finish will come out eventually.

This is the guitar I finished with wipe on poly:

Dude! Sweet! I'll keep sanding until I get where I want. I'm about 85% now, it's that last little bit that seems to take the most time. I'll probably give it another week and then, worse comes to worse, I'll consider it one of those fancy "relict" finishes.:barf:

Re: Minwax Wipe on Poly

I've never had problems with Minwax wipe-on poly. Then again, I use the satin, mainly on necks and use 3-4 coats and I lightly sand in between coats then use 0000 steel wool after the last coat.

Yeah thats a much easier and more suited application for it. It makes a nice thin neck finish that feels good.

Re: Minwax Wipe on Poly

If you want to get an aged Fender neck look, do you use a tinted poly like the golden oak, or do you just keep it natural?

I'm also curious about poly vs. lacquer, because minwax has both. Which would be better for that classic tinted neck?

Thanks.

I keep it natural and let time and playing tint it. I'm not in to the aged look too much on new instruments. There is an amber tint poly-satin I believe.
