Mira got a little tweaking

I've really loved this guitar since the moment I picked it up but I've kind of fought with it to get it to sound the way I wanted. I knew it was in there but just didn't have the right pups to match the guitar.

The stock pickups are IMO a poor choice for the guitar, they sound really bland and do nothing to favor the great balance the Mira has, in fact they work against it. So I put in a C5/59 set I had and while they were OK, a little too hot and a little too boomy, usable just not quite right for the guitar.

These Saturday Night Specials sounded like they were what I was looking for so I finally found a set and went for it. I am thrilled with the results. Really lets the natural sound of the Mira shine thru and split they really work well especially in the middle position. Excellent balance all round, plenty of punch and they back off nicely too.

That's what I like about A4 magnets. They just seem to let the natural tone of the instrument come through. Glad that you like them!

Yeah that's where I was at though I like them more since I got the Mira. The original Mira's are great too, mine is an S2. The S2 Singlecut Standards are really nice and would totally dig on a nice goldtop McCarty with dots, can't say I care for the birds much.

I've been wanting to try the SNS in my 245, but the output scares me. The 57/08s are amazing but hotter than I prefer, and at similar DCR as the SNS (9.4/8.5 for the 57/08s) and they have A2. I'm afraid the SNS will pull too far away from "vintage" output

They are a bit hotter than the 490's in the Tribute but I haven't A/B'd them.

If you had to choose, do you like the bridge or neck model more? Or, would you just suggest the set?

I'm thinking of putting an A4 in either a Jazz or a Seth Lover to pair with a Custom 8 in my Les Paul. Natural is exactly what I'm looking for.

9.4/8.5 sounds to me like it could be the 59/09s which are wound a bit hotter than 57/08s. I believe 57/08s normally read between 8.25 and 8.8 for the bridge and 7.75 to 8.15 for the neck. Highest one I ever heard of was 8.84K. Not that I've sampled a whole lot of these, but my own set are 8.5 and 8.05. And they sound magnificent.

I really like them both, I think they work together about as well as any other matched set I've had. Generally I like matched mag sets even if they are different winds, I don't know that I like one more than the other so far? They split well too. They are so much better a match for the guitar than what was in there it isn't funny. I'm kind of maybe leaning toward the neck a little bit because it sounds so full without the boomy-ness you can get sometimes but the bridge is a near perfect mix of some honk and growl. I always play "Gimme Three Steps" when I pick it up, it's like it begs for it.

I so want to try these in an LP.

I gotta say these pickups made me love this guitar.

I like them both, but I play on the neck pickup probably 70% of the time, so if I don't get a set, I replace the neck pickup in a guitar first. But as a set they are really great.

The past few years, the "tm" versions are the hottest, and what PRS are now selling aftermarket. Mine are from 2014 and right on the spec they advertise (metered mine). The 59/09s have similar resistance readings but are different mags, wire and winds

Used at the gig tonight, backup to the Tribute. Mmm the Tribute kind of crushed the Mira but I didn't really get to re-eq for the change, broke a string and had to fly thru a tight set. Using house Hot Rod Deluxe maybe? Much better thru the Dual Terror

Thanks, didn't know that. Mine are older ones and they're just amazing, really deserve the hype that's grown up around them over time.

I absolutely agree about A4 mags generally being true to the wood they're in, and more balanced that A2s or A5s. In a good lively Mira (or many guitars with good intrinsic tone) the SNS would be fantastic. In an axe that's a bit bright A4s have sounded a little wiry to me, but for a warm axe they can be ideal. One thing I've found is that they really do need different amp settings to bring out their best. Until I realized that, my A4s all seemed just to lack a bit of character. They're different enough from what I've been used to that there's a certain adjustment period.

Would love to compare the SNSs eventually with my other A4 sets (PRS, Wizz, Sin). Duncan has a knack for getting things right and I'm sure these are no exception.
