Today, my brother Bruce brought me his latest amp design to try: the Mission Aurora. About $1500 and totally handwired! No printed circuit board. http://www.missionamps.com

Christian's been asking me to check it out and this is the first chance I've had to hear it. I knew Bruce was coming in today so I brought two of my favorite guitars: my Hamer Daytona with Duncan APS-1/Twangbanger set up and my rosewood fretboard Strat with the single bridge Custom Custom trembucker.

So how does it sound? Amazing! He brought it in looking for a critique and I told him not to change a thing...it's perfect.

IMO, Bruce has finally put it all together: fabulous tone and way cool cosmetics that remind me a little of the 50's Gibson GA-40.

The Aurora has it's own thing going for it but it also reminds me of several of my favorite amps. It has alot of Brian May Vox AC-30 tone...alot of Marshall JTM-45 tone...alot of the tone of my '51 Fender Super...and alot of the tones of a '59 Bassman.

The highs have alot of the glassy crunch of a '59 Bassman or Marshall Plexi but they are never piercing or ice picky. And the mids have alot of "bark" and what I call "groink" to them. Killer for Joe Satriani tones when I plugged in my Custom Custom humbucker Strat.

The tone controls are extremely effective and the overall personality of the amp can be changed dramatically by playing the volume, treble, bass and master volume off of each other.

I liked the amp best with the master on 10, treble on about 7, bass around 3 and the preamp volume anywhere from 3 to 7.

I found that I could turn the volume of my guitar down to 2 - 5 and get a great clean tone, and somehow Bruce has designed this amp so that the tone does not get muddy or lose highs when the guitar is turned down for a cleaner rythym tone. Exactly what I've always wanted from an amp.

Now here's the kicker: Bruce has designed an internal boost circuit in this amp that is controlled by a footswitch. I can set the amp up for cleanish to semi-distorted tones and get everything from clean to semi-overdriven sustain and grind...and then stomp on the footswitch and get some of the most natural and soaring overdrive tones that I've ever heard from an amp.

Again, the overdriven tones makes me want to try to play like Joe Satriani, and I think Joe would love playing through this amp.

It's a twin 6V6 design with a 5AR4 tube rectifier.

We also experimented with differant preamp tubes and found that we could really alter the tone of the amp and make it more Vox like or more Marshall like or more Fender like by simply changing preamp tubes.

With a 12ax7 for the 1st preamp tube and a 12ay7 for the phase invertor, the tone got much more compressed and buttery and reminded me of Brian May's soaring lead tone...and all without the need of an external overdrive pedal.

Reversing the positions of those two tubes (12ay7 for the 1st preamp tube and 12ax7 for the phase invertor) reminded me of my tweed Bassman or a plexi Marshall.

Bruce has invited me to demo this amp at the Dallas Guitar Show in April and I'll be there. I think he really has a winner on his hands.

And hopefully we'll have the same amp with reverb and also a 40 watt version with two 6L6 tubes ready in time for the show.

This is a Great amp!

Very cool review Lew!

I was on the phone with Bruce 2 days ago and the Aurora came up...it sounded like a kick ass amp. I told Bruce to let me know what they get rolling! Im glad ou got to try it out...makes me want to try it even more!!!

Re: Mission Aurora Amp Review!

Thanks Christian!

Like I said, I can picture Joe Satriani loving the daylights out of this amp...I'd like to get one into his hands.

I think the thing that blew me away about this amp is how throaty and sustainful the mids are even with single coil pickups...and how I could go from easily overdriven soloing tones to clean but slightly crunchy rythym tones just by adjusting my picking attack.

Reminded me very much of how it felt for me the first time I plugged my '57 Strat into my first 100 watt Plexi Marshall back around 1970. Suddenly my Strat sounded huge and crunchy and overdriven, and it sustained like my Les Paul and took on a whole differant vibe than it had through my Twin Reverb.

With Bruce's Aurora, even with single coils I could get fat barky soloing tones when I wanted them. But turn down the guitar and back off on my touch and I could also get the nice Wind Cries Mary or Little Wing or double stop clean Rainy Night In Georgia soul/r&b guitar tones I kinda specialize in.

It feels like a class A cathode bias amp...but it has the crunchy treble of a 5F6-A tweed Bassman...only the mids are much, much more touch responsive with alot more of a modern bark or throat.

This really is a very special amp and the only amps I heard at NAMM that impressed me like this would've been Mark Sampson's latest designs or maybe the Talos amp that Bill Kirchen was demoing.

But Bruce's amp has a better and more modern soloing tone, IMO.

I can't wait to hear the reverb version of this amp and the two 6L6 version with reverb that'll put out about 35 or 40 watts. Lew

I know what you mean...but my '51 Super only has a tone control! No bass...no mid control. And, of course, it's a total stunner tone-wise. I think it depends on the amp...I don't miss there being no midrange control on the amp. The controls are so interactive that you can adjust the midrange by just playing the four controls off of each other.

And Bruce's footswitch for the internal boost boosts the mids (and a whole lot more!) when it's time to solo.

I think it's the best looking amp he's ever come up with. Solid pine with locking box joined corners just like a 50's or 60's Fender. He brought in a whole chain of differant color coverings that it will be available in. Even had some of those western handtooled leather looking vinyls. The speaker is a Mojo Vintage 30 clone. Lew

that's a great looking amp and since I know Bruce, I KNOW it sounds great. :)

Re: Mission Aurora Amp Review!

Lew,

very nice looking amp ... it's got it's own look, without going crazy

I think it's totally OK to do without the mid control, but on the old tweeds like the Deluxe, they had the second volume that affected the gain structure.
Unfortunately, most players see amps with just a tone control these days and feel they're missing something.

not me, though ...

I'll have to think about coming down to Dallas in April :)

Re: Mission Aurora Amp Review!

Terry and Christian: Are you guys serious about coming to Dallas in April? I'd love to meet you two in person and get your feedback on Bruce's new amps! Lew

before I get seriuos about this let me ask...when is the show?

I dunno for sure...mid April. Give Bruce a call: 303-423-4103. I can't think of anyone I'd rather have give this amp a try! You know how much I respect your opinions on these things. Lew

WOW! Thanks Lew!
I'll be talking to Bruce several times in the comming week, I'll be sure to ask him the details! Is Bruce gonna be there?

My brithday is in April so maybe I should take a little road trip for myself!

Re: Mission Aurora Amp Review!

Bruce told me he was asked to send this amp to the guys at Tone Quest...guess they did some big amp shoot out and that the results will be published in a future issue.

He was a little bummed when he got the amp back and saw that all the controls had been dimed except for the master volume which was on 2! :smack:

Why is that kind of cornball tone so important to players these days? :laugh2:

When Curly and I walked into the Eminence booth at NAMM to try out speakers, the first question I was asked was: "How much overdrive would you like on the amp?"

I said "None!" :laugh2:

I'd been hearing that "Bagful of Angry Bumble Bees Tone" for three straight days at NAMM...it was the last thing I wanted to hear more of.

Just makes every player sound the same!

Yeah...that's a tough time for me because I'm closing my store in Boulder in April and reopening in Nederland May 1. But I'm going to find a way to do the show with Bruce. I'm ready to make my living from music again. Hope that saying "Do what you love and the money will follow" is true...
