Check out System of a Down - Toxicity. Darron used a Dual Rectifier and some sort of 100w Marshall in the studio when making that album. I think it was with a JCM800, but it'll give you a good idea of the sound.
The Darkness use a Marshall and Dual Rectifier combination. Oddly enough, the Recto is for the lead work, which kinda surprised me when I first read it.

makes sense to me, i've always thought a marshall was real fat & dark, typical hi-gain, so it sounds better as rythm
but rectifiers have a more modern sound, which doesn't sound right when used for rythm under a marshall
a local metal band annoys the hell out of me cuz their lead player has a mode four & the rythm uses a mesa, its like fat over raunch, just...not right

I mix Marshalls and Laneys and I live happily
A DSL and a Recto is a good pair but you can get a better result with a JCM800 and a Recto - or a Valvestate and a Recto, or a Randall SS and a Recto :saeek: This way there is more difference between the characters that may end up with a thicker sound, something like if 2 rhythm guitarist played who are pretty accurate for each other.

I've always liked the sound of stereo rigs with two different amps, whether it's Marshall and Recto or any other combination. What I like is when one amp is EQ'd with bigger lows and highs with higher gain, while the other has denser mids and slightly lower gain. That way, the EQ covers the entire spectrum, making the sound huge. Having one amp set cleaner than the other means the cleaner amp will have to be set a little lower in volume since it punches better. What you end up with is more touch sensitivity under your fingers, meaning when you play lighter, the cleaner amp is really clean and the dirtier amp is a bit more clean. When you dig into the note, the clean amp breaks up while the dirty amp is fully distorted.
I don't set them drastically different, just slightly different in gain, so the cleaner amp adds more boldness to the notes underneath the gainier tone. That's the trick to running a great sounding stereo rig. If you've ever wondered why bands like Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Metallica, ACDC or the Darkness have such huge tones live, it's because they use that formula.

i think its switchable between 16 and 8, but i'm not sure
and yes, those facts might be the reason for my deep hatred of marshalls
or the car stereo parts in their amps, whichever is more convincing ;-)
