Mixing/Micing/Recording Help...(not sure which one I'm messing up)

I just picked up an SM57 and a Behringer mixer today. I've succeeded in capturing my clean tones very well, but when it comes to OD tunes I'm not so pleased. Do you mic the amp differently when recording an OD tune?

Also, if I record something w/ my mixer setup 1 way, then realize the hi EQ is too high, is it possible to fix that? Or do I have to record it again?

Leave the mixer EQ at nuetral.

For OD sounds, mic the speaker about 1" from the grill, a touch off center of the cone. Adjust to taste.
