mixing speakers in a cab

ehdwuld

A Ficus
so say you have a 30 watt and a 50 watt speaker
both 16 ohms
in the same 2x12 cab

say the 30 is 100 percent efficent and the 50 is 97 per cent

will one be louder?
will one blow
will one distort
will anyone notice

Re: mixing speakers in a cab

It's not % it's decibels, which just happens to hover near a value of 100ish for 12" speakers...

And 100 ain't anywhere near max (not that there is a max to the scale....hydrogen bomb ground zero, or huge meteorite impact, whatever the value, would probably be max real world though)

But yeah the 30w would be louder, if measured and spec'd by the same brand. Otherwise, who knows.... speaker watts ain't loudness, but rather the maximum amount of power the manufacturer rates the speaker for. Go over that and it's supposed to blow more often than not. Or something...

30w would also be more likely to distort earlier, PROBABLY, but again if made by and rated by the same folks... if not? Anybody's guess, one could be like those cheapo chinese car stereos with 1000's of rated wattage that look like theyre made of recycled basketballs, distort like a mother, and can't hold a candle to a 20w tube amp in volume...

More efficient will be louder. 30W speaker would limit power handling at 60W.

Speaker distortion is quite dependant of the particular speaker. Some 50W speakers might distort if that scenatio would be pushed to it's limits, some wouldn't. G12H especially doesn't really distort much despite 30W power handling.

Re: mixing speakers in a cab

Don't know the answer, EHD, but I do have a 25w Greenback & 60w V30
in my vertical 2x12 and it sounds great.

Re: mixing speakers in a cab

You just gotta try it out. I have a 120 watt speaker and a 65 water in the same cab. The lower watter has a higher db rating but they seem to balance really well. Two different companies = apples & oranges on the efficiency ratings.

Re: mixing speakers in a cab

If it's a vertical, or will be placed vertical, then you might want the lower db model to be on top.
In the case of V30 and GB, I'd definitely want the GB on top.

Re: mixing speakers in a cab

Awesome
I was thinking in my mind of combining a 15 and a 12
In a vertical slanted top cab
