Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

I want to mod standard in-line pole piece to 3+3 offset pole piece.(like Fender Wide-range or Lindy Fralin P-92 etc.)

There's no particular reason to do this. It's just for my aesthetic taste.

I found this one.

Can I swap the screw pole piece to slug and slug pole piece to screw?

This bar seems necessary for screw pole piece fixation.

Cut it in half and put it under each screw side, it seems theoretically possible to replace it.
But I do not know if this is actually possible. So I would like to ask if anyone has actually done it.

And I'm just trying to do it for cosmetic reasons, but I wonder what's changing in terms of sound.
And it's expected that paraffin will fall off during disassembly / assembly. Do I must re-potting?

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

No you can't.
Slug and screw are different size.

In the Fender wide-range that whole pickups construction is different.....and does sound different to a standard Gibson type humbucker. The fralin pickup is one pickup wound with 2 smaller coils.

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

Slug and screw are different size.

I know that the diameter of the screw head and the slug are the same. That is, the hole sizes of the bobbin on the screw side and the slug side are the same.
So putting it in a bobbin would not be a problem.
If the "size" you mentioned refers to the length, long-legged plates like SH-1 or APH-2 etc. have holes on the plate only one row,
but other pickups have holes on the plate in two rows, so I think it would not be a problem.

Would it be okay to explain exactly what the word "slug and screws are different size" means and what the problem is?

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

Is it okay to give you another question?

Is it impossible to connect the screw pole piece to the slug bobbin side?
Is there a thread inside the screw bobbin and the screw is fixed to the bobbin itself?
If the screw can be connected to the slug side, the screw bobbin can be widened to make both the slug and the screw possible.
I wonder if the inside of the screw bobbin has a structure, and the screw pole piece can not be connected to the slug bobbin side.

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

There is usually a degree of threading present in the screw coil bobbin. Cut when the screw is threaded in. Your screw could well simply fall through the slug bobbin if the keeper bar and the baseplate don't have any thread anchoring - and this is variable with pickup brand.

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

If you like the 3+3 look, it might be worth trying the proper Wide Range pickup design. A bit more like a Fender where the bar mag and poles are replaced with pole magnets.....The Creamery is one place that does them in a regular humbucker dimension.

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

SD pickups are good enough for me, and other boutique pickups are more expensive than I need.
And because there are many types of SD pickups, there are many options to choose from. That's why I asked if it could be converted to an SD humbucker.

In fact I am interested in the recently released Fender Professional Deluxe Shawbucker.
The pickup mounted on this model has a pole piece in the form of a 3 + 3 offset. Of course, the sound is also good.
But I feel sad because they did not sell this pickup separately.

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

The 3+3 as a shawbucker, in the MIM level tele Custom and whatever you might do to a humbucker to make it look like the 3+3 are no different to any other humbucker tonally. Only the proper wide range construction will sound different......and the only SD that will make that tone is from the custom shop - probably well in excess of the price of many boutique options.

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

Is this just for looks, or are you trying to get it to sound like a Shawbucker? I haven't heard one, so I don't know how it sounds compared to every other humbucker out there. The Custom Shop could certainly build you something like this.

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

As it is written in the text, it is only just for looks.
I do not need a shawbucker and I do not need my own sound from a 3 + 3 offset style pole piece.
Therefore, if this was a simple task, I would like to try it.
I have not disassembled and assembled the humbucker so there are many parts that I do not know about the exact structure of it.
So I asked about the structure of the humbucker and the possibility of modification. That's all.
After hearing AlexR's explanation, I realized that it was impossible to convert. So probably I would not try.
Thanks very much for all the answers.

Re: Mod to 3+3 Offset Pole piece?

If it's only for looks, you could use a 12-screw pickup and just put a 3x3 cover on it. Screamin Demon could have three of the filisters swapped with three of the hex screws, for instance. Easy, and no dismantling required.

GFS makes an inexpensive 3x3 pickup that'll fit standard humbucker mounting. But I think a Duncan would sound better.

EDIT: Just in case.
