modal vamps

Heel Whacker
guys

for fathers day, i got a copy of mick goodrick's book called 'the advancing guitarist' ... very cool book at first flip-through ... so now i am sitting down with it to get started and it says to record myself playing all 7 modal vamps (they are using the key of C to illustrate the point, so no sharps or flats) ...

does this mean that i just vamp on one chord for each mode ?

C Major 7 for C Ionian
D Minor 7 for D Dorian
E Minor 7 for E Phrygian
F Major 7 for F Lydian
G Dom 7 for G Mixolydian
A Minor 7 for A Aeloian
B Minor7 flat 5 for B Locrian

can any of you recommend some more interesting modal vamps?

cheers

Re: modal vamps

play a measure (or even # of measure) of dorian, and play a measure (or even # of measure) of phyrigan

ex. C-7 | D-7| |C-7 | D-7|

Re: modal vamps

thanks!

that would be based on a key center of Bb major, right?

what is the 'spanish' sounding mode ? ... i seem to remember that there is a single mode i can play over both chords in a 'bull fighting / toreador " vamp ... if i played an E major chord and then an F major chord ? ... is it phrygian or locrian?

Re: modal vamps

phrygian is pretty spanish sounding, i guess.

Here is a great chord to use as a phrygian vamp:

3 (barre w/ 1st finger on 3rd fret)
3 (barre w/ 1st finger on 3rd fret)
5 (use 3rd finger here)
6 (use pinky here)
x
3 (barre w/ 1st finger on 3rd fret)

Don't play the 5th stg. So basically, play w/ pick and fingers style, or thumb and fingers.

Now tell me, isn't that the coolest phrygian voicing you've ever done heard!

Re: modal vamps

opps, this might help: The above chord is a G Phrygian voicing. So, u should use a G Phrygian scale (3rd degree of an Eb major scale).

That chord voicing is moveable, like most barre chords. Use this moveable voicing to practice ur phrygian lines in all keys. Just don't strum the 5th stg of the voicing.

Re: modal vamps

Yeah, phrygian is spanish sounding. Locrian is more diminished sounding.

Btw, Seafoamer, I think you added an extra barred 3 on the D string, or else your guitar has 7 strings.

Re: modal vamps

thanks brandon - you rock

btw guys, this book is really very cool ... it is almost an 'applied theory' pre-quel to the 'zen guitar' book we've mentioned a few times .... it gives ideas without 'methods' .. you are free to do the 'method' of your choice .. or discover your own method ... just gets you thinking in new ways .. working through an interesting 'only play on one string at a time' application now ... adjacent strings next ... and so on and so on

Re: modal vamps

Hey man, here's a few vamps I really like . . .

Phrygian *based in the key of F*

|Am7 |Bbmaj7 |Am7 |Bbmaj7

Phrygian based in Ab

|Cm7 |Db\C |Cm7 |Db\C

Dorian based in C

|Dm7 |Dm6 |Dm7 |Dm6

Any other questions man, just toss me a pm or something of the like . . .

Re: modal vamps

Mick's book is really good. It is somewhat nebulous, but it certainly generates different ways of looking at the fret board. The thing I REALLY like about it is how damn funny it is. I love the section where he has transcriptions of his use of space in his solos and the next page just has:

1.

2. 3.

4. 5.

etc.

Hilarious!!
