Modded Epiphone valve Jr clip- new LP Junior kit build vid clip.

Bullet Proof Toneologist
While I am waiting to get my old Royalist amp fully dialed in, I thought I would toss this up. I cam across a killer youtube vid of an Epi Jr converted to a Gibson GA 5, with just a few simple changes. 2 100k resistors upped to 220k, and one 1 meg resistor removed, I opted not to do a bypass cap over the other 1 meg resistor, but went off the grid by upping one .022 cap to a .068 and another .022 to a .1 The result is beautiful grind and warmth out of a 5 watt amp.

The guitar is a kit build, a carved top LP with a single p90, a dream combo for me. Guitar came together really well. Opted for 250k pots, a .047 tone cap, and a low output p90 wound to 6.8k I am not a fan of a bunch of grind out of a p90, I like em tamed a bit.

Just messing like I always do, addicted to delay, so delay is in the mix... Loving this 100.00 amp, and a kit guitar I have 140.00 into. Cam pics upload, so not hi res pics.

I have modded several of those Valve Jr amps.....a lot can be done with them. Of course...a lot can be done with any amp I guess.
It has been a while, but I do not think I have seen one with a black board.......

What kind of wood is that guitar.?
Love the P-90.!

It's a mahogany body with a thick maple cap, at least 1/2 an inch vs the thin veneer that most kits seem to have. The only issue was that the pickup cavity route was 7mm off, so had to make some more room, but it ended up being a non issue visually. All in all very happy with the kit.

That's a cool guitar. I've had a similar idea kicking around for awhile. LP Junior, but with a carved top.

I didn't know that the Valve Jr. was that close to a Skylark. I have a circa '63 Skylark that I just love (though the speaker badly needs to be reconed).

I had no idea as well, til I started checking out YouTube clips. 4 resistors and one cap are the only difference. I went a bit outside the box, but was very happy I stumbled upon it.

I like the nice retro effect on the video. That guitar is absolutely gorgeous!

Many thanks, I was very happy with the end result, now I am just playing it all the time to become friends with it. :)

I miss the Indiana Jones hat.

(Suite axe & amp sounds)

Ha! I got my hats still, but had just returned from the ol gym.

Nice. :bigok: You're going to have a heck of a sleeper stable. :)

Re: Modded Epiphone valve Jr clip- new LP Junior kit build vid clip.

That was really cool. I am going to say something now, and I mean it as a total compliment, but your tone is virtually the same in every clip. Part of it is your drive/gain structure preferences and just the way you hear tone, but I am sure a big or bigger part of it is in your hands. You always sound like 'you' regardless of amp/guitar!! :)

First of all, I love the old school camera effect.

I had a buddy who did some mods to an Epi Valve Jr. and it was sweet. Love those amps for sure.

That's a pretty decent looking and sounding kit guitar if I must say so myself. Nice post.

That's kinda what I was wondering - not in a bad way, but say you have 20 amps dialed similarly - how would you choose between them? Maybe Kevlar can hear the subtle differences.

Re: Modded Epiphone valve Jr clip- new LP Junior kit build vid clip.

While I definitely hear the differences between each amp, I am the absolutely the sound like I sound kind of guitar player. There are many much more effective than me at taking on different playing personalities, but I have always sounded like this. It could be through a single 12 open back, or a dual 15 monster cab, matters not. Generally I am always steered to a warm and open tone, I hate a bright and sharp tone, but don't like mud either. Neck pickup needs to sing too. :)

Man that sounds a lot better than I was expecting! slightly hollow, in a very warm and just a bit jangly way. Too cool!

Halen, I have always called that the round sound. :) Full but not tight bass, smooth treble, and lots of clarity. I gotta admit I was surprised this amp ended up with the guts it has, was expecting a much brighter sound with a single el84 driven amp.
