link for the place that mods them: http://splawnguitars.com/marshall_mods.htm

what do you guys think?

Considering that Scott charges $1850(US) new for his top of the line custom built Plexi, and $1750 for the one right below that, I'd say the price is too high. I see them go on eBay for $1100-1400 on a regular basis. Scott's shop is only about 30 minutes from my house, and he has worked on my amp, my cab and my guitars. He builds amazing heads and cabs, so the product is well worth the $$.

For what the add is asking, you could get a new one, shipping being the only difference. Pick one up on eBay and save a bunch. Or, call Scott and see if he has any trade in's. People upgrade all the time, and I think he takes some of the stuff in on trade. I could always run by and test something out for you. I know shipping to Canada wouldn't be THAT expensive.

Re: modded Marshall Plexi... your opinions???

They are amazing amps for sure, but I think the price is a little pie in the sky. The guy is probably taking the price of a brand new 1959 SLP and adding the cost of the mod on top of that. I think Scott charges $350 for his standard mod, + like $100 for the clean channel and $25 for the footswitch. It's amazing that he can turn an SLP into a 3 channel monster, but he can. The cleans on his amps are wonderful, and the OD is great as well.

Well worth the $$, but not $2400. That gets you into Bogner, Two Rock territory...a whole nuther league.

Re: modded Marshall Plexi... your opinions???

Considering the thread about DSL50's we've been contributing to, how does Scott's modded Plexi compare in OD sound to the DSL

Re: modded Marshall Plexi... your opinions???

Scott's amps are just voiced differently from the standard Marshall production line. I've never played a DSL next to one of his, but I would venture to say that Scott's od is more lush, harmoincally rich and "throaty" or "meaty", they just roar that deep roar.

The DSL will do that to a certain extent, but it's more modern. Scott's amps are like Plexi on steroids, "brown sound" to the max and beyond.

Re: modded Marshall Plexi... your opinions???

I just picked up Marshall Plexi 1959 SLP RI with a bunch of David Bray mods for $1000 including shipping. If it's not a reissue, then it's still to high. If it is a reissue, that is way out of line!

I've been told by many top modding guys that the RI is actually the better way to go, because the build quality is much more consistent and you won't depreciate a vintage version.

Re: modded Marshall Plexi... your opinions???

David Bray sells them directly as well with his mods...

http://www.davidbrayamps.com

If you go to the sound clip page and check our the last 4 clips, that is exactly what my new amp sounds like. David does the mods and puts soundclips up for you to approve what he's done so far.

Re: modded Marshall Plexi... your opinions???

living in the area that Splawn is in, I can see it be something worth doing.. but to have it shipped out and than returned to Toronto, I'd definetely need to get my hands on some Denaro to satisfy this GAS.

...albiet, it's something worth investing in.. that's for sure!

Re: modded Marshall Plexi... your opinions???

haha... I see Jeff's in the proper books!!! If I ever did a mod, Jeff would definetely be the reference

Re: modded Marshall Plexi... your opinions???

I emailed the seller and this was his response... I was curious to know what year the amp was... this was his response:

Hello, It is a 2003 reissue bought in OCT. 2004 modded by Scott Splawn 3 channels. new this is just over $4100.00 cnd. with all the mods, without the mods it is about $3200.00 CND. I think the price is fair and I would knock a little $$ off to a serious buyer. See pic's of the amp and links to Splawn Guitars. Anymore ????'s let me know... This sounds just like the Quick Rod model Scott modelled all of his designs around the SLP1959 plexi.

it is a nice looking amp and probably sounds incredible
