Modded My Crybaby Today...

and all I gotta say is WOW!!

I was reading this site a while back..

and I figured I'd try a couple of the mods....

apparantly for 3 models of Jim Dunlop pedals, 1 Capacitor is the difference between the 3....so with that "Jimmy vibe" coursing through my veins I changed the .01uf cap to the .022uf cap( Dunlop JH-1 specs).

sounded like Jimi!, after that I was thinking to myself.....wow..all I need is a couple of resistors and I can do a few more mods!!..so down to the
"radio shack" I go, and I buy a pack of 100 or so resistors of different values for $5CAD. reading the site I put in the "Voicing" Mod, along with the "Midrange Boost" Mod and...

WOW.

What a Difference!, puts the Stock Crybabys to SHAME..total Vibe to it, nice Bassy Whoosh, and nice Mellow Highs...(not ear peircing Shrills like Stock)

all I need to do now is buy myself a DPDT or 3PDT Footswitch and
True-Bypass I go!!

for all you Crybaby users..this mod is a Deffinate go.. Costs Pennies, Takes only Minutes to do...and..(this is the best part)....TOTALY REVERSABLE!!!
dont have to worry about ruining your pedal(as long as you're 1/2 decent with an Iron)

From Now A Proud Crybaby Owner

Cheers,

~Mitch~

Re: Modded My Crybaby Today...

I agree I did some mods to my Crybaby and was saying WOW also. It's amazing what a difference changing two or little resistors can make. And it makes me wonder how in the world they send out the stock CryBaby's the way they do.

It sure does...and Why pay $80-$100USD for "Custom Mods".
When I get the DPDT switch the cost of my mod will still be Under $20USD

Re: Modded My Crybaby Today...

Cool. I've been thinking about doing a mod to my wah. That link helps a lot. Thank you.:)

Re: Modded My Crybaby Today...

I did something similar last year. Vocal Mod, Mid boost, True-bypass, Fasel, and LED. Made a world of difference! Wait till you do the true-bypass mod, you'll be surprised how much tone a Crybaby sucks out when you're not using it!

The reason is,is that these wahs have stuck with the same cap and resistor values over the years according to schematic specs,so most of the wahs in the Dunlop series stay true to spec...

Don't forget to get a great inductor into your wahs! The recent fasels aren't really the answer!

I Know from lots of experience being in some of the best wahs ever made and current ones also!

Re: Modded My Crybaby Today...

Will these mods work for a 535Q?

Yep you need to locate the components on your board and change them out according to your mod diagrams.

True bypass is easy on the Vox 847 and more of a PITA on the new Crybabys! I much prefer to mod the Vox series!

Do you know if the diagrams included in the link at the first post will work on the 535Q? I just don't wanna mess something up!

They will work, you just have to find them on your particular board revision.

As for the inductor mod. John is absolutely correct! If you think it sounds good now. Drop a Halo from ariel fx or the Area 51 in there. .

The new Dunlop Fasels red/yellow are "better" than the stock inductors aren't they? I saw the thread a couple days ago where you were high on a new source for inductors...are "those" really better?

Re: Modded My Crybaby Today...

You don't need to do the voicing mod on the 535Q. That knob on the side, the "Q" control, is the voicing mod glorified. Having a pot in there instead of a fixed resistor allows you to dial in more voicings. It's a pretty cool wah. True Bypass on a wah is a must-do.

Do one mod at a time though. Make a change, try it out, make another, try it out. Not only will you be able to hear what the change did but if it's not working afterwards, you know where to look without backpedaling too far.

They are a little better than the stock black round plastic garbage you see in most of the Dunlop series, but there are mucn better inductors available from places like Aerial FX,Banzai Effects,Area 51 etc.....They've found the magic that made the original 67 Vox wah so very vocal...Something that today's run of the mill wahs lack!:smack:

A really good inductor is about $30.

The "Q" adjustment is very very subtle though....It just changes the frequency peak of the wah...I Like doing gain and other board mods and I just use a trimmer pot on the board for the guys that want to change the Q peak..:13:

Re: Modded My Crybaby Today...

Could a Morley be modded? I have a compact wah - volume from the late 80's early 90's.

Re: Modded My Crybaby Today...

Not to hijack, but if anyone's looking to try out a Fulltone Wah Inductor (can't buy 'em anymore), I've got one I'd be willing to trade for an Area 51. I've tried the yellow fasel, red fasel, banzai halo, and fulltone so far and like John I preferred the Fulltone over the yellow and red fasels, and just slightly over the banzai. The fulltone is my favorite I've tried so far, the only one I have yet to try is that handmade source John recommended, and an Area 51.

I Love the Fulltone inductor Joe! Try this guy Mike's inductors out for $23...I Like them and have ordered 2 so far...

Joe....Here's that link again...Nice guy also, always replies back promptly to e mails!
