Modding a Closed back cab to be 1/2 open and 1/2 closed?

I'm considering new speakers for my 4x10, and a friend recommended making the top of the cab open back, and sealing off the lower speakers.

What kind of benefit, if any, would this offer? Any ideas on how?

youd loose some bottom end, but opening up half would make the cab more airy sounding. IMO its a neat idea but be sure to close the bottom half off fully to keep some bass response, not just put a 3/4 length cover on the back like the mesa cabs.
