Modding the DS-1

Just another quick question for ya guys. I have heard that modding the DS-1 will turn it into a WHOLE new pedal. I play music along the lines of hardcore...not metal...but similar to bands like Thursday, etc..
I have checked out indyguitarist.com and their 3 different mods.

The 'Evil Mod' distortion seems what I want...more warmer and ricer distortion.

Will the modding make a huge difference? and will it fit my kind of music?

Yes. However if you aren't looking to mod it yourself, but want an amazing mod, check out Stratdeluxer97's (John) mod to the DS-1. I hate stock DS-1's. I LOVE his modded DS-1.

Many guys will post after me and maybe John himself will too.

yeah, the evil mod is a REALLY warm sounding pedal, very very bassy. I can give you the mod sheet for it, i bought it a long time ago. But i'm telling you now theres not gonna be a good ammount of crunch if you use medium to low output pickups. If you leave off the 1uf film cap you get some crunch back, but it gets less warm

every DS-1 I've played has been in need of some type of "tune up", so I gave up on BOSS, but Vai and Satriani Can't be wrong.... Go for the Mod, I bet you'll be satisified.

I honestly think that John Spina's mods blow Indy away (and possibly even Keeley), plus I'm pretty sure John is cheaper. I had an MT-2 modded to Indy specs, and it was the worst pedal I've ever heard. I seriously hope there was something wrong with it.

Thanks for the plugs guys....I've nothing to say really,as I think the forum members have a better review to offer than my very "biased" review....LOL

Basically your DS1 will have more lows,more gain,a different inline chip(Better tone)more harmonic content and sustain,and a more natural sounding pedal in a tubelike way and without the fuzzy crap you hear riding over your notes!I use the best caps money can buy that'll fit on the board and metal film resistors that make the pedal quieter. It's taken me about 2 years to find what "I" liked in the DS1....I hated Keeley's SEM,but his Ultra mod was pretty cool.....My mods are not copies of anyone else's ideas! Contact me if I can help?

Vai and Satch use the DS-1 with the Ultra mod by Keeley, it's a very sweet pedal IMO.

Sounds great!! Stratdeluxer, do you have different mods or is there just the standard. Is there a way to email you and discuss the DS-1 because i am really interested.

i'll put it this way. after buying a new ds-1, and paying stratdeluxer to mod it, i have invested far less money than you will spend to get an equally good sounding pedal from another manufacturer in stock form. and if you compare a ds-1 that stratdeluxer has modded to the really expensive distortion units out there, i really doubt that you'll hear enough difference to merit the extreme difference in cost.

stratdeluxer's mod makes the ds-1 sound like a cranked jcm 800. seriously!

John, all of these rave reviews are really getting to me! I'm very curious to hear how your DS-1 mod stacks up to the SEM & the DS-1 PRO but the 'ole lady will skin my hyde if she see's me with "another orange pedal" :blackeye:

LOL....The SEM to me was too harsh and buzzy sounding due to the LEDs...I don't use LEDs to generate my distortion...I also don't use mica caps which I feel add a sought of "hi fi" sound to the pedals...I want smooth,tubelike,analog tones from my pedals..

Can't comment on the other DS1s,but my DS1 just smokes the Keeley SEM DS1....
