Model Check Help Please

Hey guys,

I came across this piece awhile back, and I can't find any info on it now. I know it's an EVH piece, and I can find some photos of similar builds, but never the SD. Could anyone point me in the direction of a model name? I appreciate the help!

Here are some pictures:

Is the EVH stuff a snap-on plate?

FWIW,some kinda Steinberger,if that helps any(not trying to be a smart-ass)...

Without pictures of the back, it's really difficult to say. If the guitar's a real Steinberger GL-2TA, then the EVH stripe job would possibly be a face plate. The guitar could also be a refinished Steinberger Spirit or one of the many licensed copies like a Hohner. I don't know the various Steinberger trems well enough to identify that one.

Re: Model Check Help Please

I concur with the re-finished Synapse, Spirit, Yo Music or Höhner suggestion.

The rounded ends to the pickup routs are pretty distinctive. (A genuine "faceplate" guitar would not have these.) This probably explains the baseplate modification on the bridge/Treble position pickup. If the guitar ever had plastic humbucker mounting surrounds, the screw holes have been filled in prior to painting. The vibrato looks very like the licensed one Höhner used.

Good catch on the pickup route ends; that guitar is definitely NOT a real Steinberger GL. It also isn't a refinished Synapse as the control configuration and pickup routes are wrong. That leaves a refinished Spirit or one of the copies.

Synapses don't have trems. A Synapse has a blade switch as well. The headpiece isn't from a Synapse. Most other Stenbergers have 24 frets. My guess it is an Ed Roman creation (cobbled together from parts, and charged a premium price). He is well known in Steinberger circles for slapping together parts from many models. Or, it could just be someone who wanted the SB 'look' without any of the functionality of a TransTrem.

What was the deal with Mr Halen playing those? I thought I read that he dug them, but had some kinda endorsement deal (with somebody else) and was told to stop playing the Steinies?
A freind of mine has a Steiny bass from when they first came out. He said it cost the same as a Camaro he was looking at... But he still has the Steiny, it looks every minute of its age, but has never broken down or let him down at a gig. (Good thing he plays in an 80's cover band...)

VH used the TransTrem to get those chord transpositions in songs like 'Summer Nights'. The TransTrem (there were 3 versions) allow each string to bend at a different rate, so when you use it, the strings remain in tune relative to one another. You can also 'lock' them in a few different positions for higher and lower tunings.

Thanks guys. It's from a pretty influential modern player as a gift. Roman sounds about right. ill post a pic of the back if that helps
