Re: Modelers

I use a Line 6 Pod HD500 as a DI box. I don't use an amp model but use an eq and a few effects. I may get the new vintage amp pack which comes with an acoustic amp model.

Re: Modelers

I know a few guys that keep a POD around as backup with a DI box just in case they can't bring their amp, or need to play a gig in another country. I mean, it's just a drop of water to the ocean of AxeFX, but for the price it's probably the best you can get.

On the same note, they sound pretty good when using it, and I've also heard people sound like absolute crap with them. They're pretty fiddly.

You just have to sit down and play with them a lot. Don't expect to find an amp you like, EQ it, and get all the right pedals in 30 seconds. It's a pain in the ass for sure.

Re: Modelers

I don't have any experience with either of those two models, so I can't really vote. I use a POD HD400 and love it... so I kinda dig the idea of the POD X3 being the better of the two. ;)

I can't tell you how many hours I've spent tinkering with the sound in order to get to "my" sound... definitely a PIA! The funny thing is that I have all these different variations available to me, but just use one amp setting along with a couple different levels of distortion. Occasionally a chorus or phaser, but I rarely vary!

Re: Modelers

I have a Behringer combo amp. If the modeling amp is anything like it, then it's a good product.

Re: Modelers

I have several kinds of modelers
but nary one of those

I had the Behringer on my Amazon wishlist for the last two years
deleted last night

just deleted it

Re:Make, Re:Modellers

IMHO, this is Guitar Frenetic's area of expertise. Since he has not posted yet, the question that you have to ask yourself is this. How many sheets of paper need weighing down?

Er, aren't the third and fourth poll options identical? :scratchch

Re: Modelers

I don't like either of them, and I don't mind modelers. I just sold my HD500, but what sounds better recorded and direct is my Tech 21 FlyRig 5. These days, there is no reason to buy an old modeler. Think of them like buying an old computer. A computer now isn't just a little better than one 7 years ago...it is a lot better. In modeling, either go with software, a hardware device that gets regular updates, or something analog like the FlyRig.

My basic patches are clean, overdrive, distortion, and fuzz, each with chorus, delay, phaser, and wah. I don't like having a bank for each song, because A) that's too much work, and B) I like using my POD more as though I have 4 effects pedals than if I a patch on a modeling system. I learned on pedals, and I like that tap dance.

Re: Modelers

I have a V-Amp 2 which I rarely use, but it's ok for what it does. I agree with Dave (Mincer) that there are plenty of new options to go for that are superb and good value rather than buying older stuff.

I really like the look of the FlyRig.

Re: Modelers

I'm inclined to say the Line 6 but I don't know without having used either.

Percy: You know, they do say that the Infanta's eyes are more beautiful than the famous Stone of Galveston.
Edmund: Mm! ... What?
Percy: The famous Stone of Galveston, My Lord.
Edmund: And what's that, exactly?
Percy: Well, it's a famous blue stone, and it comes ... from Galveston.
Edmund: I see. And what about it?
Percy: Well, My Lord, the Infanta's eyes are bluer than it, for a start.
Edmund: I see. And have you ever seen this stone?
Percy: (nods) No, not as such, My Lord, but I know a couple of people who have, and they say it's very very blue indeed.
Edmund: And have these people seen the Infanta's eyes?
Percy: No, I shouldn't think so, My Lord.
Edmund: And neither have you, presumably.
Percy: No, My Lord.
Edmund: So, what you're telling me, Percy, is that something you have never seen is slightly less blue than something else you have never seen.
Percy: (finally begins to grasp) Yes, My Lord.

I agree completely... not crazy about having a bank for everything (although I have been known to occasionally set one up for a particular song). Otherwise I basically use mine as a stomp box of 4 different settings... I can do nearly everything I want to do with them and I use coil splits, etc. from the guitar to obtain other variations.

Well I should have said, "Having used a Line 6 POD HD500 and given the quality in that, I'm inclined to say the Line 6 but I don't know having not used the X3 or the Beringer unit."

Re: Modelers

I've used a POD Pocket with dirt and delay pedals in front, and EQ afterwards, for a small gig.
Sue me.

I'd say both units are good enough. And it surprises me how good most modeling devices sound through a real guitar cab, disabling the onboard cab sims.
