modeling amp speaker options...

I was thinking I should make a new baffle for my vox vt-20+, to rid of the weak sounding stock 8" speaker and fit a 12" speaker in there... First I assumed a guitar speaker would be right but it's a modeling amp and has aux inputs for iPod and such so then I was thinking a full range speaker would be more appropriate... Now I'm thinking maybe a mid, a horn, and a woofer type setup... Thoughts?

I've got a Vox AD50VT and swapped the stock speaker out for a Celestion Classic Lead 80. Couldn't be happier with that choice. It sounds so much better.

I would fit it with an external speaker cab

you will have a hard time fitting a 12" into that box

Re: modeling amp speaker options...

It's funny cuz I usually run just a line out of it into a PA and it sounds good to my ear but the factory speaker sounds like German buzz bomb...

I wanna have a little box that I can carry around that has more beef... I measured the box and it appears I can fit a 12" speaker (checked celestions specs against my measurements) and it seems one will just barely fit, with about a quarter inch to spare...

And I like hotrodding tiny boxes... :D

Not sure of you'll get any tonal improvement by merely jamming a 12" in a box built for an 8". There's an issue of cab resonance to consider, otherwise you end up with speaker-only tone and no "extra" from the sound bouncing around in the box.

If you actually use the iPod feature to play tracks through it, you may consider a full-range speaker (keyboard amps, p.a.) instead of a guitar-voiced speaker.

Personally I'd get or build a full 1x12 cab and see about sticking the chassis inside that. Maybe even a 15" cab so there's way more room for the head. Not as portable by that point, but should yield much better tone.

Plug it into a self-powered monitor with a tweeter. See what that sounds like. There are cheap options in that direction if you like the speaker modeling in the amp.
