USED USA Jackson, take your pick of models :headbang:

Or if you HAVE to have a brand new axe, THE SL-3, RR-5 and SLSMG might float your boat ;)

if mainstream brand is not a concern, check out www.blackburncustomguitars.com.

david blackburn will build you a neck-thru with your choice of wood and hardware at a very reasonable cost. he is a very nice guy to deal with. you can discuss all things guitar and he will reply you promptly.

That SLSMG looks really nice! Have you played it?

Re: Moderately Priced Neck-Thru Guitar

To answer your nato question... nato is an asian mahogany with tonal properties somewhere between a light weight mahogany and alder. Not bad stuff.

The BC Rich Classic neck-thrus are very bright, but they do rip. I love my neck-thru mockingbird.

Re: Moderately Priced Neck-Thru Guitar

I have an old ESP M1-custom laying around, and it used to be my number 1. Well, I recently played a used LTD neck-through at GC, and it was freaking almost identical to mine for like half the price. Same neck, binding, feel, frets, quality, etc. I was blown away.

Re: Moderately Priced Neck-Thru Guitar

+1 for ESP or Carvin.

I don't know much about Jackson's. Zerb does.

Re: Moderately Priced Neck-Thru Guitar

i also say Carvin, although they're 25" scale....

sold this a few months ago....right up your alley...

ESP H-302

+1. The SL2H-MAH was the first thing to come to mind.

I've never played the SLSMG, but I bet Zerb has.

Schecter C-1 classic, Charvel model 5/6, Jackson SL3/SL4.
+1 You would probably have to look for a super good deal on a new one for under 1k, or go used.
and ibz RGT42's are mahogany.

Re: Moderately Priced Neck-Thru Guitar

I have a carvin neck thru the cost me 750. you can get what you want for easily under 1000 from carvin. I don't know why you don't consider carvin a big brand. but anyway, if you are not comfortable with ordering a custom made from carvin. go with SLSMG. I was considering that model seriously before I bought my carvin. I tried it a couple times in local stores. it plays great the satin black finish is smooth all over. it looks great, much better than carvin DC127. but carvin offers important options like oil finished neck, stainless steel frets, pickup tapping, ebony board. and carvin neck is slightly narrower and rounder than SLSMG.
oh, SLSMG's stock pickups aren't very good. they don't suck they just don't have anything special to my ears.
anyway, you can't go wrong with either.
Low end ESP/LTD's (under 1000) aren't as good. I would stay way from them. Low end ibanez RGT's are ok. I do think they make maple thru mahogany models.

Re: Moderately Priced Neck-Thru Guitar

Get a Carvin, seriously!

You can choose anything as finish and pickups and everything. The only thing is that you can't try them out, but everyone who played one said that they did the best necks out there.

Personnaly i would TOTALLY stay away from major brands. Especially when dealing with "less common" things like a neck-through. Remember that carvin is USA made too, while any other neck-through for less than 1k$ will be japan or corean or something.

The Schecter C1 exotic is a thought.

Yes it's a set neck. But, the heel is shaved like that of a neck thru.
So there's no hindering access to the upper frets.

My recomendation would be to look at some of the old Ibanez Musicians (there is very decently priced one here ). Lados are also good. This one looks like a set or deep-set neck. Most Lados I have seen are neck-through. Some of those old neck-throughs from the '70s can be had for a very good price these days.
my buddy has one of those and its an amazing guitar. the pickups are pretty squealy but it plays like a million bucks.
