Re: modern humbucker paf

I would suggest the jazz neck. It's bright, extremely clean, it sounds a bit like a 59' (Paf style model) with less bass boominess.

And the best part, completely clear under gain,

A PAF in an RG won't sound muddy. In my experience at least. Any other specific things you want?

Re: modern humbucker paf

Perhaps Jazz bridge model, considering it's in a 24 fret Ibanez RG, which has way less lows compared to a LP, and it's also closer to the bridge, so the volume will be slighlty smaller.

Re: modern humbucker paf

Depends what you call muddy. If you need the crystal clear tone of a Strat neck pickup (like me...) then all neck humbuckers sound muddy. If you play hard, distorted rock and never go for a crystal clear tone then the Jazz neck or 59neck or Pearly Gates neck will be just fine...maybe even the Jazz bridge used as a neck pickup.

What I find is that all neck humbuckers have more bass than I can use. But if I roll off the bass on the amp to clear up the neck pickup's tone, then the bridge pickup doesn't have enough bass!

For me, it's a never ending battle for clarity from any neck humbucking pickup.

I like them split when I'm going for crystal sparkling clean tones...so they sound more like a Strat neck pickup.

The set I liked best is the Pearly Gates neck and Custom bridge.

Those two sound great split as well as in full, powerful, humbucking mode.

If you're looking for a roughly PAF tone, but clearer and cleaner, I think the Jazz is the obvious answer. It's very articulate and smooth, and even a little sweet. I think of it as the sugar cookie PAF.

Single coils are a different animal altogether, and I'm not even sure if they compare easily to cookies or not.

Re: modern humbucker paf

it's not a duncan, but i think a dimarzio paf pro would be perfect for what you are looking for.

,,,Do you ever buy any of these pickups we suggest? It seems you ask for advice at least once a week. Buy one and try it out already. If you dont quite care for it, trade it for a different Duncan that might suit you. I dont mean to bag on you but, come on bro.
