Depends what you call muddy. If you need the crystal clear tone of a Strat neck pickup (like me...) then all neck humbuckers sound muddy. If you play hard, distorted rock and never go for a crystal clear tone then the Jazz neck or 59neck or Pearly Gates neck will be just fine...maybe even the Jazz bridge used as a neck pickup.
What I find is that all neck humbuckers have more bass than I can use. But if I roll off the bass on the amp to clear up the neck pickup's tone, then the bridge pickup doesn't have enough bass!
For me, it's a never ending battle for clarity from any neck humbucking pickup.
I like them split when I'm going for crystal sparkling clean tones...so they sound more like a Strat neck pickup.
The set I liked best is the Pearly Gates neck and Custom bridge.
Those two sound great split as well as in full, powerful, humbucking mode.
