OK so what is the best way to cut a scratch plate and make it look professionally done

is it done with a saw a rasp and or sanding ?

I am having to remove about 4 mill from where the bridge will sit, as at the moment I am 4 mill out from the 12th fret so I will need it to be a straight cut

I can provide pics if they are needed I am not the best at explaing things.

Any way I hope some one can help me

Sam

Re: Modifying scratch plate HELP

Dremel, if you've got one, to rough it in. Then file to get it square and straight edges. Then sand if necessary to make it smooth.

Re: Modifying scratch plate HELP

Flat files tend to leave telltale sharp corners. I try to finish any freshly cut edges with a rounded abrasive tool. This leaves marks more like the router/cutter that made the original edges.

I used a coping saw and a bunch of files when I was custom-making a pickguard for one of my guitars.

Then scrapers to get rid of the file marks.

Thank you every one for the great ideas

for this job it will be hand tools but I think I might invest in a dremel :)
