Mooretone guitars

Anybody familiar with this shop? The reviews on Harmony Central are glowing with one guy saying the Mooretone strat looks feels and sounds like his original early sixties strat. These guitars are built from scratch and "reliced" if you wish to look like an original pre-cbs fender.

Re: Mooretone guitars

It looks like a brand new startup guitar business. I like how they look. I wonder if they're undiscovered gems?

Re: Mooretone guitars

i wonder how long until fender shuts them down.. all the guitars i see have fender decals on the pegheads

Re: Mooretone guitars

Well, I've got an offer on one of his guitars. I'm hoping he accepts it. The reviews on Harmony Central are outstanding for both the pickups and the guitars so hopefully they're from people who know what they're talking about. This is my absolute last music purchase for quite awhile as I've spent a lot the past few months on stuff. I hope it lives up to the reputation. :smoker:

Re: Mooretone guitars

The pics make the guitars look like junk to me. I don't know, but looking at the "Ducky" and the Voodoo strat copy ... the finishes and colour seem almost amateurish ... even for fake Relicing.

There are number of people out there who are excellent at it and manage to take well lit and defined photographs so that I can tell the quality of the work.

Who knows ... I can't get a sense about quality from those photo's. But Ez's right ... Fender usually shuts down these types of operations pretty quickly

Re: Mooretone guitars

I don't think they look cheap at all. I haven 't heard back so I don't know if I'll even get to try one out. This offer is the 3rd time in a week I've tried to contact them though both their website and ebay. I'm starting to get a bit turned off.

Re: Mooretone guitars

Well--I spoke too soon! They accepted my offer and I'm getting one made. Anyone know the difference between the shape of the fifties models and early sixties? When I get it, I'm assuming in a month or two, I'll give a full report! :smoker:

Re: Mooretone guitars

So how much is it going to cost you and what model are you getting?

Re: Mooretone guitars

It's going to be $1300. I want a faded sunburst with the white pickguard and I've got to ask what the difference is between the fifties and sixties bodies before I decide on that. Rosewood neck with big frets. :smoker:

Re: Mooretone guitars

Just checking in like I said I would. Mike Moore, the owner of Mooretone guitars is by far most hands on custom builder I've ever dealt with. We spoke in detail about what I wanted and he taught me about things I didn't know. I got the neck to inspect (yes, he sends the neck to you to inspect before it goes on the guitar) and this thing was a work of art. I've never seen a Fender neck with such beautiful wood, beautiful finish or attention to detail. There wasn't a sharp edge anywhere on the neck. The frets felt like they were part of the wood, even on the sides!

The grain on the rosewood is so stunning I just wanted to hang it on the wall for all to see. I sent it back literally the day after I got it so he could get it mounted and the whole guitar sent to me. I should have it by this weekend, early next week at the latest.

I'll check in again when I get the finished product.

Re: Mooretone guitars

Well I got my Mooretone guitar yesterday and guess what? The Post Office ruined the neck. The box looked like it had been through a war and bent in half when I got it. It was marked extremely well with fragile, this end up etc...

The sound, finish and hardware on this guitar were just outstanding. Even with the screwed up neck and the action high as a kite, it played like butter with 11's! I'm used to 9's so take it for what it's worth.

Mike Moore the owner reliced the guitar a little for me and it's got a great classic look to it but when I plugged it in it REALLY wowed me. What sucks a$$ is I finally get a strat I'm in love with and I've gotta send it back for a new neck. The customer service is just outstanding as well. I really mean outstanding. The only other strat I'VE ever played that sounded like this one was an actual 1962 or 63 strat back in the eighties. I've had five other strats, two of which I still own, that never came close to the quality of sound this one puts out. The bridge to me sounds like vintage Hendrix or Purple depending on the style of play. The neck--vintage Stevie Ray. Second and fourth position are killer. Sweet Home Alabama sounded just like the record. All played through a custom made Bassman clone.

When I get it back I'll try to get some pics up but I promised a report and here it is. I'll do another when the neck is right.

Re: Mooretone guitars

Okay, I wanted to play this guitar for awhile before I posted again. I got it back in a week or so after it arrived damaged (in shipping).

This guitar is just what I wanted. Mike made it to my requests and the tone in unbeatable. I had him rewind the pickup in my 1957 musicmaster and that is so full of blues soul I almost burst open when I heard it! The strat though? Absoloutely fantastic. The neck plays like a dream, the action is real low with no buzzing or fretting out and the tone--oh my god--so full, rich and ballsy I can't believe it.

I've been playing it mostly through a 1965 Gretsch 6150 and a two amp at once setup of a 65 Fender Champ and Univox U45-B. If I want SRV, it's there. Early Led Zeppelin is there. Purple? You got it. Really anything the old Fender single coils (I'm talking vintage late fifties, early sixties pre-CBS) could do, this does. Amazing.

Again, tone is all subjective, but I got what I wanted. The main thing is that Mike Moore spent so much time with me on the phone and through email adjusting, tweaking and getting to what I wanted that I really felt by the end that he was a good friend and not just some company making me a guitar.

If anyone is looking for a vintage style single coil guitar or if you've got a Mexican or whatever Fender you want some tweaking done to--especially the pickups, I'd recommend Mooretone. :smoker:

They've got great reviews at Harmony Central, and for once I agree with HC which is usually just a love-fest.
