Cat In The Hatministrator
A couple of weeks ago I went and tried a few different drive pedals out in the local guitar shop, and presented my initial thoughts on here. Well, I got a little bit of spare time so I headed out with my G&L Legacy to try a couple more.
I had been toying with a Big Muff at one point, so I decided to try the one with the Tone Wicker. the last time I had tried a Big Muff was about 10 years ago, and I felt that (for my playing) it was just too uncontrollable. The Tone Wicker is a fab little pedal, you can get all of those lovely Big Muff tones out of it, but it's a versatile beast. Jumping between having the Tone Wicker On/Off and the Tone On/Off really opens this pedal wide open.
I think that if I was to get a Big Muff then this would be the one for me, but ultimately I'm not really sure how much use I would get out of one with my playing.
I also got to try the HT Dist and the HT Dual pedals from Blackstar. I tried the HT Drive during my last trip out and loved it. the Dist was very similar to the Drive, with a little more dirt and the fabulous Infinite Shape Feature (ISF). This alters the tone between American and British tones. It's a little more obvious if you lower the mids slightly, but what a great tone shaping tool. You can also set it somewhere in between for the best of both!
The HT Dual is a 2 channel pedal. Ch 1 has a switch to change between clean boost and crunch. The boost is nice, but I think the Crunch has been misnamed as you can definitely get more than just crunch out of it!! It cleans up nicely with your guitar's volume, and I spent a great deal of time just jamming away on that. Very clear and defined, with a very rounded and articulate low end. The 2nd channel gives you all the gain you need, and using the ISF and different gain settings can get some fab 80's tones out of it. I had pinched harmonics jumping out from all over the neck, and I'm not particularly good at those!
I recently sold off some of my pedals, and I have a strong feeling that a HT Dual might soon be residing on my pedal-board!!
