more sparkle from a JB?

Guys, I finally changed pups in my old Ibanez Mini 335.
I have a Dimarzio Virtual PAF in the neck and a JB in the bridge.
The JB sounds pretty good but it needs more sparkle or harmonics or something.
If I cut the screw pole pieces off at the back of the pup, will this give a little more sparkle?

Re: more sparkle from a JB?

Try removing the tone control, or if you use it alot, perform a no-load tone pot mod.

Re: more sparkle from a JB?

I was actually hoping for some tip that didn't involve dragging the harness out out the bridge pup hole to accomplish....
I DO like the No Load tone pots though. I might try that.

Re: more sparkle from a JB?

Try lowering the pickup and raising the polepieces. This is supposed to make a pickup chimier.

BTW, what do you think of the Virtual PAF at the neck? Can you compare it to a Duncan'59?

I didn't know that worked... how does it make the pup chimier?

Re: more sparkle from a JB?

I don't know the physics behind it, but when I lowered the 59 I used to have at the neck of my Lester all the way past the mounting ring and raised the polepieces a bit more than usual, it made it clearer and more bell-like. Before that, I though it sounded dull and boomy.

I like the Virtual PAF. It sounds in between a Jazz and a '59 to me.
I'll try the raising poles idea.

You shouldnt have a problem getting harmonics from a JB, what amp and settings are you running through?

I was using my Pro-Jr to test it with.
Tone on about 7, volume on 4 or 5.
I think my switch is not making great contact on the bridge pup setting.
It's sound varies on the middle position if I wobble the switch a little......
I'll spray cleaner in it tonight.

Re: more sparkle from a JB?

are you saying the guitar's controls are at tone 7 vol 4/5? Cuz that might be the problem.... if the tone is rolled off the highs are less present.

No, the amps volume was on 4/5 and the amps tone was on 7 or so.
Guitar controls were wide open.
