More Stuffs for you guise (Full song wtf??)

Changed pickups and thus strings on the M-I and decided to finally record a cohesive version of this song (I wrote it in like 3 parts over the course of a year and it's had different tones for each part... sounded terrible!), and I decided to quadtrack/DI it for reamp testing as well. Also trying out a new kick and some new verbs and other schtuff that doesn't really matter in the end haha.

Song!!!!

Snare's a bit too loud, gtrs could come up and are just a POD patch, but whatevsies! Call it "epic preproduction."

ESP M-I NTB (81) -> PODxt -> FireFace 800, Superior 2.0 for drums, Trillian for bass, rain and thunder and random samples from god knows where.

This was the same axe/POD patch used in this thread, but with an Alt 8 in the bridge:

Other thread!!!

I no likee passives, so I swapped it and am much happier with the tone/vibe of the axe now.

Wow. You gotta figure out a way to get your butt in a big $$$ studio someday. I would love to hear a fully produced album's worth of that.

Re: More Stuffs for you guise (Full song wtf??)

Quality as usual, man.

The riff that comes in at 50 seconds is a monster, too. Nice!

Re: More Stuffs for you guise (Full song wtf??)

awesome stuff! I dont see the snare being too loud or the guitars too low like you say, i personaly thinkt he mix sounds pretty kick ass as it is. Great job :bigthumb:

Re: More Stuffs for you guise (Full song wtf??)

Killer tune. Always amazes me to see guys like you and bulb making such quality recordings with your own home rigs.

Re: More Stuffs for you guise (Full song wtf??)

Haven't posted this one on the Sneap forum eh? Not quite Sneap forum approved sounding or something?

Cool song, but yeah the guitars definitely sound a little digital and I don't quite think the mid range character of the rhythm guitar really suits the mix as well as it could to be honest.
Just sound a bit muffled to me, and a bit too mid heavy in certain areas of the mid range.
No issues with the lead guitar sound though. PODs seem to have a knack for just making lead guitar sounds work.
Probably would have been better to have reamped it with POD Farm, POD Farm sounds a bit more natural and realistic compared to the older POD XT models.

Re: More Stuffs for you guise (Full song wtf??)

sounds really frosty to me! dig the guitars - sound and playing! I don't think the snare is too loud.

not sure how I feel about that particular snare though - it doesn't snap, crackle, and pop enough for my tastes, but it does sound like a more recent soilwork type one if that's what you're shooting for.

You think everything sounds muffled.

Have you had your ears tested? ;)

I've got DI's for it and they're all uploaded now so I'll be posting it over there soon. The problem is I'm not at all looking for mix advice, since this is just prepro.

Guitars are not at all final, no need to comment there. Just a POD patch I use for tracking.

I have PODfarm Platinum, it's the exact same thing as the XT with model packs man. I might play around with it a bit, but like I said - this isn't for anything but writing, so I'm not going to obsess over anything but a tone that doesn't detract from the song.

Sorry, I'm really not following your description of snare tones. Do you mean this is too ballsy/deep of a snare? I cannot stand thin snares - I need a lot of body to them.

The snare in this song is far closer to something like Natural Born Chaos or Figure Number Five than Stabbing the Drama, if that's what you're getting at.

Re: More Stuffs for you guise (Full song wtf??)

Gnarly....!

The flow and structure of the song is just incredible.. The level of playing and production is just way up and beyond. Etc, etc. I really can't add anything of useful tips. Go with your guts - it seems to work! (btw, I didn't think the snare was too high..).

Where would you get samples from the nature like this from typically?

The models were actually slightly updated from the XT to POD Farm/X3.
If you dial in the exact same settings for some amp models on the XT and then do it on the X3, the X3 does sound better and different.
Granted the difference is not night and day obviously, but it's noticeable.

Really been digging the track, listened to it about 5 times today already.
Look forward to hearing a mix closer to what you have in mind with a good re-amping job

yes, I like thin snares that sound like the crack of a whip (the police, primus, old meshuggah, etc.). just a personal taste I guess. if I played drums, I'd use a piccolo snare probably (although even in virtual drum sets I don't always go with a piccolo). you bring up a good point of needing to keep in what you like. sometimes it's easy to get swayed by public opinion to mix differently or have something sound a certain way that might not be what sounds good to you.

If that is is in any way serious, then hell, I just don't know what to say :laugh2:
I don't think Jeff is suddenly just going to give up on audio engineering, he's already a badass guitar player anyway and clearly he manages his time well enough to fit both into his daily schedule (which more guitar players could strive to do really)

Re: More Stuffs for you guise (Full song wtf??)

Everything from the mix to the playing sounds good to me. Great job Jeff!!

I know hell do both, but engineering can take a ton of time... anyway he will do what he does and I dont have any effect really. I just wanna see him having fun in a band, and having fun recording his own stuff. Im entitled to my own opinionz:28:; peace dude
