More than APH1, less than custom

Looking for suggestions on a humbucker for one of my Les Pauls. The Burstbucker 3 that I'm using is sounding a bit brittle/harsh on the top end and I'd like to replace it. I have a custom in my Explorer that sounds good but the ideal pickup would have a similar tone with just a little less output. The APH1 seems to be short on output, so I'm not sure that the slash would be enough. I'm not a fan of the C5 or 59, so I'm not inclined to go that route.

I was wondering if the Perpetual Burn might be an option, or if I need to look at other manufacturers.

The Slash has around the same output as the '59B, perhaps just a hair more. I have both. I guess you want more output than that, then?

Re: More than APH1, less than custom

I think so, I don't think the Slash is all that far off from what I use now.

Re: More than APH1, less than custom

I had the same experience with the Burstbucker 3 in the bridge of my Epiphone Boneyard Joe Perry Les Paul. I put in a nickel covered Pearly Gates set and am much happier. Not more output than the Burstbucker 3 but more balanced and less of a harsh tone and more of a classic Paf tone with some sizzle.

UOA5 Custom.

'59/Custom with A2

Interesting. I haven't tried this, but I am curious. I would have said a regular 59/Custom Hybrid, which adds the good stuff from both pickups and none of the stuff I don't like.

I actually like the BB3 for a lot of things, just not this project. I'm leaning towards an air zone at this point.

Slash is a little hotter. Also a little beefier/thicker. Not quite the same as an APH1 that's a bit louder. Then again, output for some people can be that knob on the amp marked "volume".

The Burn is drier and has a flatter EQ than the APH1 and the Custom, if that's a factor.

Air Zone might be an option. Or if you can wait about 5-6 weeks, the new DiMarzio vintage PAF should be out. What do you think about the Norton?

Amp volume won't fix a problem with EQ and how hard the guitar is driving the front end. Addressing the signal into the amp is my goal and I have no desire to add a handful of pedals into the signal path to fix the sound. I just need to get in the ballpark, I'm sure a few different options will do that. I appreciate the info on the Burn.

The Perpetual Burn sounds pretty good and it's in the output range that you want.

You simply change the magnet to an A6 and you'll get what you're asking for.
