I love tube amps so much that I hate them sometimes!
Here's my lingering problem...(thank you hendrix95 for your previous help)
Replaced preamp tubes in my ycv50 amp with jjs. Clean very much improved, o/d channel sounded harsher to me. I put a mesa 12ax7 tube in v1 and it smoothed it out a LOT. (not perfect though and lost that better clean channel sound) What I'm wondering is what is that characteristic of the mesa tube that improved my o/d channel? Is it a higher gain tube?
So now, the amp sound great, but only when the volume is about half way. And I usually need it a little louder. When I push it louder, it becomes to harsh and trebly for my ears. especially standing out in front of the amp(8-10feet). Now at this point, is it the tubes? Is it just the high frequencies cutting through(should I do the old duck tape trick?), is it the speaker? Any ideas or similar experiences?
Thanks
