More YCV80 Frustrations!

OK so I always knew the YCV80's speakers were front loaded and that the grill cloth was removable...

so today while iw as thinking baout purchasing new speakers i decided to pull off the grill cloth and see what I was getting into...

Pulled up the first corner of the grill and noticed that the tucked back edges of the cloth over the metal grill had somehow come lose and became fused to the other edges of the speakers cone area...

and i had tore the fused cloth from the speakers when removing the grille.....

1-how do i tell if i have tore the speaker? seems the black shiney outter part of the cone is the only thing affected and is worse on the right speaker where you can see paper cone material where the shiney part was ripped off...no visible holes just damage...I really cannot fire it up until I get the new power tubes in a few days now...so im a little paranoid...

2-what can i do to secure this grill cloth for causing future speaker damages?

3-What speakes should I be looking at? I'm thinking Eminence Wizards or Swamp Things...

Re: More YCV80 Frustrations!

Can you post pictures? If I am understanding you correctly it sounds like the cloth nearest the right speaker somehow came loose from its frame and got onto the doped area of the speaker cone? If all that happened was some of the dope (the shiny stuff) was pulled from the speaker cone with no tears, then I would think you have no worries. If the cone was torn in the process you would be able to see it. Sounds like you are in the clear. My son has that amp and has had good results with a combo of Emi Wizard/Governor and also his current config which is a Emi Legend GB12/125. Hope I was some help.

Re: More YCV80 Frustrations!

yeha thats exactly whats going on....

the speakers tested fien through my vox AD60 head @4ohms set at 30watts today...

if anything they sounded just a little bright with the presets setup for my V-30 loaded 2x12....

Re: More YCV80 Frustrations!

what speakers are in it now?

as far as the swamp, it's AWESOME, but not alone, you'll need something to mix it with, with better highs & high mids, like a v30

the wizard is kind of my go-to speaker for a guaranteed good tone, i just love everything about it. I haven't tried it in open back though

Re: More YCV80 Frustrations!

2 stock 8ohm 70/80s...which is like a stripped back budget Classic Lead???

No Bass anywhere...could also be the amp and open back cab there...but no low end

But great complex mids and the highs sound amazing when you crank the master volume

I want alot more massive bottom and less highs actually my mids i like to be crisp and loud...

I know i want the bottom like the swamp thing but I think it will rob my mids?

Re: More YCV80 Frustrations!

yeah, the mids are pretty dark on the swamp. It's great for adding fullness though

which is why i reccomended the v30 mix, v30's need to be filled the hell out to sound good

but 2 wizards would also probably do that. They'll have less lows, i don't wanna say tighter cause they're still pretty loose, but less boom for sure

I've also heard that swamps only really have a lot of lows in closed back cabs, probably because the lows are just so low they don't project well in an open back cab

but yeah i've never tried them in open back

Re: More YCV80 Frustrations!

I'm really stuck between Tonkers, Swamps Thangs and Wizards...

I think tonkers are prob between swamps and Wizards.

opinions?

Re: More YCV80 Frustrations!

Hey Lo Fi -
I think that between you and Drew Half, you guys have the answer for that amp. Emi Governor (or V30) in combination with an Emi Wizard, lots of guys use this set up in 2x12 combo amps.
Good Luck

Re: More YCV80 Frustrations!

I've kind of settled on the Tonker x2 after heaving a pair in a open back cab

its got a bit more mids and the same fat bottom as the Swamps and I think the more subtle top end would sound pretty nice in the YCV's open back cab.

but i will always wonder how a swamp and wizard combo would sound 12 feet away with the amp cranked up a bit...
