Most Dumble-ish OD

OK sorry about the thread spamming with OD pedal questions and such, but this one is more specific.

My best friend who basically lives at the poverty line/works 7 days a week/goes to community college because he cannot afford to go to a public university/father is a vietnam veteran missing a leg because of a hand grenade explosion in combat, the list goes on. But despite the crap he goes through, he is hands down the most awesome, honest, honorable human being and friend.

I want to get him a good OD pedal. He is going to school for music and over the past 3 years he scraped together enough cash for a DRRI, and a friend of his gave him a MIM strat (he used to play a completely beat up epiphone SG special i believe?, the model that goes for 150 or 175 i don't recall). He is starting to play gigs with other students from Miami Dade College and is getting involved with the local jazz/fusion scene, and the style he plays could definitely use an OD pedal (he owns NO pedals to push his DRRI).

His styles range from Wes montgomery to John scofield, but he usually tries to dial up a relatively dark sustaining tone ala robben ford/larry carlton/trey anastasio. I'm guessing this is in the range of a dumble kinda tone, so what's a good OD pedal for 200-250 bucks max that could hit the nail on the head?

His amp is also starting to distort. He has the stock 6V6's and rectifier, i think im gonna go ahead and get him some JJ's 6V6's and a weber copper cap so he wont need to worry about tubes for a while.

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

I'd go for the Barber Small Fry. That has a really good Dumble like sound, but many other tones can be dialled up as well.

and for the instruction manual

I own one of these and it's a fun little pedal. You can change the distortion characteristics from a very edgy, angular crunch, to a very smooth santana-esque distortion. You can even use it as a moderately clean boost-it's quite versatile, silent and very well built.

I've never played a dumble, and most of us haven't, so I think that you should go for a pedal that can change the shape of the distortion. The small fry does just that!

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

I almost forgot the most important thing-

You are a good friend-very cool.

BTW-check out thegearpage.net/board, you'll find small frys floating around there off and on.

New they're 150 and I think a pretty good value.

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

I have a Menatone Howie. It rules! I'm not running it through anything decent, but judging how it makes my solid state sound, I'm sure it'll blaze with a solid tube amp.

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

Well I am still trying to convince the boss that we need an Americano drive in our line;)
That one is also based on that sound, that I have benn listening to for a few decades by now;)

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

So, since I don't have sound on my computer, which pedal "won" that shoot-out on YouTube?

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

+1 to the zendrive ... i just got one used for a tiny bit above your upper limit .. but man does it nail that family of tones

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

Wow! $180. from Hermida for the Zen Drive but a wait that could be four months or more!

Over $300 on Ebay if you want one right now.

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

I just picked up a brand new Zendrive in the box which was delivered to the original owner at the end of December. After watching the shootout and hearing a few clips, I can hear that thing working nicely with my amps. I guess some smart cookies ordered 2 and made their money back on the second one. Got it for $285. I will post a review and clips when it arrives in a week.

Cheers................................wahwah

You are a true friend.....sometimes we forget what it's all about. Thank you very much.

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

Zendrive is probably the most affordable solution out there right now. I've owned others like the Ethos that were a lot more complex and a lot more expensive. My favorite is my CJOD, but they're discontinued, way overpriced and the only solution I can see right now is that I'm waiting on one manufacturer to tweak his circuit to nail mine and then he'll be producing a run of them.
