Most Dumble-ish OD

Re: Most Dumble-ish OD

Menatone Howie
Hao Rumble Mod
ZenDrive!!!
I own the Rumble Mod and the ZenDrive. I've been meaning to check out the Howie but haven't gotten the chance.

The Rumble Mod is a great option and you should be able to find one in your price range (I got mine used for ~$130). It's not the creamiest drive I've ever played but it gets what I refer to as the "Dumble chirp" as far as getting the initial attack that I hear in recorded Dumbles. Another wonderful thing about the Rumble Mod is the way I can get easily controlled musical feedback at reasonable band volume.

That said, I find the Zendrive more Dumblesque (or at least more like my Two Rock). Its dynamic response is much more like my amp in how it goes from clean to mean in response to picking dynamics. It has great clarity. Even at higher gain levels it sounds remarkably "clean", allowing complex chords to sound good. Its sag has a very amp-like feel. I haven't gotten the cool feedback I like with the Rumble Mod but I haven't had as much time with the Zendrive at band volume.

FWIW, the Zendrives currently shipping were ordered only about four months ago. As the backlog gets shorter, the price of a used one should drop considerably.

Finally, the Barber LTD gets you some nice creamy drive for about 100 bones new.

I think a zendrive would be the ticket for my buddy. I'm just gonna have to scrape the cash for it.
