Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

I was thinking in a more general sense as what others would recommend as players progress. He is not going to go out and get all of these at once. I was attempting to put these effects in order of importance/ usefulness so he can add tools as he gets better.

If it helps: Gibson SG Carved Top, Marshall MG, Fender Twin Reverb

Guy likes everything from light metal to classic rock to country.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

If he uses both amps, the first thing he needs is a Radial Bones ABY amp switcher. It will allow him to switch to either amp by itself or both together.

So, as he progresses, I would recommend, in this order:

ABY,
Tuner,
OD,
Reverb,
Compressor,
Distortion,
Delay,
Chorus,
Wah,
Volume.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

If I was starting out, or buying for someone who was, I'd get them a small modelling amp that had a tuner and some basic effects built into it. More than adequate for playing around with while learning, and a lot cheaper than falling down the pedal rabbit hole. Save that for a year later when all beginners spontaneously decide that all the gear they started with is crap.* If nothing else, at that point, they'd know which effects they actually like to use.

*Seriously, it doesn't matter if you start with a Squier and a Peavey Rage or a GIbson Historic and a JCM800. A year after you start, you'll decide it's not good enough.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

Some of the greatest guitarists in history developed their talent and their style without any pedals at all. It was discipline, practice, desire, and talent that got them great.

Music has changed and nowadays I agree that there is some need for more electronics than just a guitar can provide. But it's still a good idea to develope and learn without the aid OR hinderance of extra devices. We tend to rely too much on effects and less on ability/talent.

That being said.....

A good tuner is essential, not only for keeping the guitar in tune, but also for ear training. You need to know what the correct note is before you can hear it in your mind.

An OD pedal can do so much for your tone and is so easy to learn how to use that I think this is a no-brainer addition to his arsenal.

Reverb is nice but not essential. I played in bands for 5 - 10 years without reverb and I did just fine. You don't say what amp he is using, but most beginner amps have this built-in so I'm going to assume that this is a non-issue.

A wah pedal is not necessary at all, especially when first starting out. But mostly because it takes a lot of practice to get good sounds from a wah and I think his time is better spent learning the guitar rather than learning to use a pedal with very limited application.

A volume pedal was one of my first pedals and it got used alot. Constantly. Is it important? Necessary? Probably not. Useful? Maybe. It is an indespensible part of my rig because I use it mainly to balance my amps in a stereo rig with each amp having different settings and effects. Complicated, but the tone is worth it. I use the volume knob on my guitar to adjust the gain or to clean up the sound.

Encourage him to keep it simple. Become a master of the instrument, then all else falls into place. Effects can be gradually added as the need arises.

Just my two cents worth from an old-timer.

This is excellent advice - all of it.

When I started out the best thing I ever bought was a pedal tuner. I got a Boss TU-2 that I still have on my board today. If you are going to play with or in front of people, this is a must.

I would stay away from all other effects at this time. Too many new players try to hide crappy playing with effects.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

I just bought some pedals, but I'm saving up for these:

This one's really promising. It's hand-made, features true-bypass, and has already been copied by Behringer, Danelectro, Ibanez, Digitech, Boss, and EH.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

Picks...seriously, they can really influence the tone, especially in the attack.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

Have a friend who has only played for about 6-8 months ask what additional basic equipment he should get now that he has settled on his guitar and amp. He is getting lessons and is practicing so that is not an issue.

Off the top of my head I said:

1. Tuner (duh)
2. OD (tube screamer type)
3. Distortion (this would depend on guitar and amp)
4. Wah (Cry Baby)
5. Volume Pedal (I like the Ernie Ball Jr.)

Made me think about a basic set up and putting it out for others thoughts. I also think a delay, phaser and chorus could be put into this list, but was attempting to keep it simple. I am not limiting to five, but order of importance would be helpful.

1. cool haircut
2. cool shoes
3. a swagger
4. groupies
5. more groupies

Yup. I don't have a tuner pedal. But I always get a TU2 from a friend when I'm gonna play live.

Should I have bought one ages ago? Indeed. That's the only really mandatory pedal to have.

Good advice.

I've been playing since I was 16 and it took me until last year to finally figure that out. It's something that's easily overlooked but it can have a massive effect on your sound.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

There is only one "piece" of gear he needs now...and it's the reason we all play in the first place...@$$

seriously - can't even begin to answer that question. Just depends too much on him. I mean, seriously - tuner???

I assume he has one of those at this point. He has a carved top SG and a Fender Twin! Admittedly, maybe mom & dad have more money than sense...

any way, wtf...my 'current list of essential guitar pedals for all styles.

* Distortion pedal assuming your amp does not do it for you
* OD pedal assuming your amp doesn't quite do it for you
Delay, assuming your amp already has reverb
Reverb, assuming your amp doesn't already have it.
After that...whatever flavor of swirly gets you rock on.

My preferences, in order:
- Chorus
- Tremolo
- Flange
- Phase

Finally, it's a love or hate it thing, so I'll say Wah.

Then another dirt box, because they are all awesome somehow for something.

Compressor and EQ get real important if I'm with the band....

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

Honestly, I'd say a writing utensil and a notebook or a laptop/PC and something to record tracks onto.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

i was going to say speakers, pickups, and good strings...

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

I'm gonna have to go with mini-fridge and bottle opener.

I did my best playing when I had a guitar -> amp setup.

Purity of gear is a wonderful thing.

Now I am addicted to my Compressor and my Tubescreamer and such, and focus too much on tone and not enough on music.

It's shameful.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

I just got my first delay last week, never even played on one before (outside of a behringer v-amp, for 10 seconds). I have already wasted more time with this thing than any other gear purchase ever. Time will tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

The only essentials are an OK guitar (that suits the genre being played, no jazzmaster for death metal crap), an OK amp (same as above, no princeton for metal crap), a tuner, and putting effort into playing.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

Has anyone said metronome yet? Though really, a drum machine/ program is SO much more fun to play along with.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

For the amount of time he's been playing I would suggest that he stay off the effects. In my day, we said that playing with distortion and other effects covered up your mistakes so it would be better to play without them.

He needs a tuner (but if he doesn't get one it will help to improve his ears) .

If he gets in a band then he can worry about them at that point.

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

I would say the guitar player is probably the most single important piece after guitar and amp, the cable and electricity is a close second

Re: Most Important Pieces after Guitar and Amp

Everyone has a distortion pedal, but what if you want great sounding cleans from a hi gain guitar and amp combo?
