Most underrated 'Duncan?

Re: Most underrated 'Duncan?

The custom custom doesnt get the attention that it deserves.

The CC was my first Duncan. I loaded a trembucker CC in a MIM Strat about 10 years ago now. It was awesome in that Strat. I never liked it in some other guitars. I sold that pickup years ago now but at times I wish I had kept it.

Re: Most underrated 'Duncan?

How does it compare to the standard JB/Jazz?
It is supposed to be closer to the original Seymour made for the original Jeff Beck Telegib back in the day.
How much of a difference I can't say and probably not too much. I bought the set from the Custom Shop.
Relatively higher mids but/and it all works out very nice!

Seth Lovers are my fave, everyone seems to search for that classic 59 les paul tone yet thay forget that those pups were not wax potted and very microphonic, microphonic pups are not a bad thing especially on an old piece of wood , seth lovers are built to exact specs of late 50's era gibson humbuckers with no wax , of course not meant for super high gain , but for classic blues and rock theres nothing better

Kinda confused though as the seths are pretty popular around here how are they under rated?

Full Shred neck. Doesn't get much attention but it is a great pickup if you want tight/bright in the neck but still strong output. Better than the jazz neck, etc. I love it.

Cool! Wouldn't mind giving them a try.

Most underrated 'Duncan?

The most underrated single coil is definitely the SSL-2. It's the pickup that most people who buy the SSL-1 probably SHOULD buy instead. The 2 has all the tone of the 1, but with a far better balance, unless you are using a wound 3rd string. But even though 99% (or more) of electric guitarists use a plain 3rd string, and very few people seem to use the 7-1/4" radius (I love it, myself), the SSL-1 outsells the SSL-2 by a huge factor.

For humbuckers, I'd nominate the AIIP. If you know how to use e.q. and gain to finely alter your tone, this pickup can do anything the PG, Seth, or Slash can do, but for significantly less money.

My vote is for the PATB-3 blues
this is a pickup that gets overlooked in my opinion because of its looks and is mistaken(just like the demon) to be a shredders pickup only,
reality is that it is one of duncans best overwound Paf's

Re: Most underrated 'Duncan?

Pearly Gates bridge. The neck model gets a lot of praise, but there's not as much talk about the bridge model, which is a pretty awesome pickup.

Agree. You can count good audio\video demos of that pickup on one hand. Don't know why...

Re: Most underrated 'Duncan?

I think the Jazz neck pup. I have this pickup paired with the JB in an ibanez along with the Custom Stack Plus (which I haven't seen alot about, however, it sounds great by itself as well). The Jazz gives me that warm sound that I like for blues licks.

Re: Most underrated 'Duncan?

I second the perpetual burn and add the black winter neck.

Re: Most underrated 'Duncan?

I agree about the SSL-2, especially around here.

I'm going to nominate the Antiquity PAF 'bucker. Now, to my mind this is an unbelievably great pickup, and a lot of players really like it.

But get into a discussion with a bunch of Les Paul cork sniffers and their favorite "boo-teek" offerings, and it hardly gets mentioned.

Funny, I always thought when people talked about the PG, they meant the bridge. Never even knew there was a neck version.

Can't really say what's under-rated, as it seems most here have mentioned every model at one point or another in regular topics. Sure, there are "standard offerings" in off-the-shelf axes, but those are meant to appeal to the widest possible market, unless the guitar itself is aimed at a niche (i.e. Jackson pointies that get EMGs or Invader/Full Shred, etc).

I will say that, when a manufacturer asks SD, "hey, what pickup would you recommend for this new Floyded/trem-spaced model?" if they pushed the Parallel Axis models, there'd be a new king of the aftermarket.
PATB-1 or 3 for a RG/Soloist/Dinky-style
PATB-2 for pointies (Rhoads, Kelly, KV, and Warrior)
PATB-3 for the Super Strats (Charvel, etc)

The PATB-2b is just so clear and articulate, yet has all the drive of a Distortion-class pickup, while the PATB-1 has a punch you can't contain. Was playing along to some WASP the other day with my PATB-1 loaded Warrior and was nailing the tones.

A fair number of the positive comments and recommendations here for Ant's have come from guys who've admittedly never owned one. They assume it's the ultimate PAF. As an Ant owner, I much prefer Seth's.
