Most underrated metal amp

Re: Most underrated metal amp

Said Lee Jackson? : popworm:

Off topic, but whatever. What’s the story on Lee Jackson? He seemed like a premier modder in the ‘80s, but now a black sheep no one’s allowed to mention. Was he a complete jerk or screw people over financially? You have the classic guys from the ‘80s still going strong (Soldano, Egnater, Bogner) and then you have several others that just disappeared (Lee Jackson, Langner).

Re: Most underrated metal amp

i agree joe, the batcat is a great metal amp. tons of gain with a tight modern voicing

Re: Most underrated metal amp

My vote goes to the Genz Benz El Diablo. I wouldn't mind owning another one. Great amps...

Re: Most underrated metal amp

AMT Stonehead

After owning a bunch of bigger name big gain tube amps to compare to, this little solid state 50 watt 4 channel amp is a monster. Not just for high gain though. Squeaky cleans to slight breakups to vintage rock all the way to rip your balls off, stomp on em, and shove them in your face, and melt ballsy face Metal.

:D

Yeah..love it.. super versatile for just about any genre and can get insanely thick & just mind-blowingly heavy when called for. It really does the sort of tones I like (classic-80's metal/thrash/death metal..even doom..) extremely well...and works great for stuff I don't care for (modern/ultra-tight/djenty ****..) as well :lmao:

I don't know about "most" underrated but it's definitely underrated.

Randall T2/V2 ..Ampeg VL-502 (Lee Jackson)

Someone I know just got a used Kustom Double Cross shipped over & it had a pretty sweet Marshall-on-steroids kind of sound...very cool sounding head you hardly hear about. Those bigger (120/300 watt) Crate Blue Voodoo's sound awesome too....I guess they're underrated as well.

He's got a bad rep from some of the Marshall mavens over to teh Marhsall Forum for' butchering ' old Plexis and Superleads back in the day. Yeah, once he was doing work for some premier guys in the LA amp scene

He's in Austin Texas now, and does mostly custom work I think .

Some of his old "Metaltronix" amps stuff is cool. Id have to hear it .His thing has always been hotrod Marshall.

Re: Most underrated metal amp

Fender Prosonic!! Bruce Zinky's monster high gain rig.

Also the later Zinky amps like the Velvet the MOFO and the superfly have massive gain and heavy tones that KILL!
This is pretty accurate for a Blue Velvet as i can pull similar tones easily from mine.

My Velvet combo unmiced gain is on around 3 or so here only effect is the delay.

Re: Most underrated metal amp

I think one of the best metal players I've heard is a local guy who uses a solid state Randall head. Not sure what model it is. He likes it because in his opinion, it tracks faster than a tube amp.

So many great pedals on the market these days, I'm sure you could find something to plug into a Fender Vibro-Champ that would deliver the goods.

And don't want to hurt any feelings, but I have never had a good experience with any Fender amp with a gain channel: Pro-Sonic, Super-Sonic, Hot Rod, Red Knob, et.al. I've never played any of them that gave me any thought about giving up my Mesa Mark III, or any of my other Mesa amps. The Pro-Sonic gets a lot of hype because of Zinky, but I've always been severely disappointed with them.

My $0.02...

Thanks, Jerry! I never go to the Marshall forum, so I was unaware. I just assumed he took people's money and never delivered (ala Cameron).

But it's not really true. The punters a Marshall forum didn't hate on him until recently his modding old marshalls was no different than anyone else at the time. Soldano hacked up as many plexis as anyone else.

Truth is he worked for St. Louis music for a long time then after that ended took other electrical engineering jobs outside the music industry but has always dabbled in custom work to one degree or another as his job would allow.

Not cool to spread unfounded rumors about people sho aren't here to defend themselves.

yeah.Lets make it clear I wasn't ragging on him, just reporting what was some of the popular opinion there. Glad you shed light on the controversy.
Maybe I am guilty for 'spreading rumours',as you put it , in which case I apologize, and won't do so again, but I think the gyst of many there was that a guy like Soldano wasn't 'Hacking' the amps, more like modifying in a purposeful and well designed manner , not "hacking"them as allegedly was the case with Lee Jackson, again, according to a contingent of guys there at the Marshall Forum. You claim they are only 'rumors'- well, Ive read and heard enough and there are more than a few guys there who would substantiate them.So not really 'rumours 'as much as accusations at this point.

Bleh not interested in turning this into a pissing match, I will just say this. 1, i am a member over there and have been for a long time I am amazed you havent figured out who Iam yet. 2, 99% of the clowns over there that talk smack about this modder or that have never owned a modded amp let alone one that was modded by Lee Jackson himself. 3, dont believe everything you read, not here, not there, not anywhere.

side note repeating these "accusations" without providing substantiated evidence is the definition of "spreading rumors"

Re: Most underrated metal amp

Simply saying that some internet choads have been making accusations of (and he even did quotes) "butchering" old Marshalls does not equal perpetuating rumors. Jerry just answered the question to the best of his knowledge. Get off his back.

I'm sure he'll do or say something dumb in the near future that will justify a beatdown, if you've just got a hard on for him.

As for the topic, lots of bands use V4's. Converge and Trap Them off the top of my head. Must use pedals though, so I'm not sure if it really counts. By that rationale we might as well add a bunch of Sunns, and Univox's, and some SS bass amps.

I'll say the original Peavey Butcher, a TS will put it into deathmetal territory. Nasty high mid peak, perfect for black metal.

Sovtek Mig60, Mig100

I never really liked the Prosonics with the 10's that came in the combo so with you there at high gain.
However the Tonemaster a good Prosonic head or any of the real Zinkys are bad boys for high gain tones.
I own a pair of Boogies ( .50 cal + Subway rocket)and the little Blue Velvet Zinky. I love my Boogies for running effects through the loops. However takeaway the effects and run them as just a raw amps and it's no contest as my Zinky's have more gain and are MUCH more expressive than any Boogie ( Marshall Soldano ect)I have ever plugged into.
If you have never really played with one of the high gain Zinkys like a MOFO Velvet or Superfly at any volume or run an arena rocking Tonemaster really cranked you won't get them.
This clip shows what I love in the expressiveness with a real Zinky amp. Camera mic is clipping some but check out how the Zinky opens up so much more that the Boogie with touch. That's really accurate for these amps and is exactly why I love them so much!!
What's a shame is Bruce is no longer building amps like these and the Supros are mere shadows of a "real" Zinky amp!!

Agreed!! I have had the chance to play with a few Jackson modded Marshalls and found them to be really great sounding amps!
Had a chance to buy one of the Jackson modded 800 heads used here at one time in fact.
