Most underrated piece of gear?

Re: Most underrated piece of gear?

Dava control picks. Found them slightly awkward at first, don't use anything else now.

Re: Most underrated piece of gear?

Pickups? Capos? Pedals? Nuts? You're all way off base.

The groupie - simple as that ;)

Re: Most underrated piece of gear?

 A tool kit and duct tape for when the bassist brings his broken bass to practise. Saying that, something simple and reliable

I know, it's been done before, but it's fun.

For me, it's the Fender custom Vibrolux reverb amp. A partially handwired, custom shop (Bruce Zinky) designed screamer. A sort of a brownface/blackface hybrid clean that is nice and fat with single coils, and a fat, sweet cranked overdrive with nice presence. Nice tube reverb and trem, too. 40 pounds dripping wet, and killer into a 2x12. Most importantly, the midrange character of this amp is such that it can cut through a mix, something even some classic fenders can come up short on.

You can hunt them down in blonde tolex, too. I'm told they were made in the custom shop for the first three years.

What about you?

Yes, yes, yes! I totally agree. I have had my CVR for about 5 years, now, and love it. I recently got out the earplugs and cranked my R8 through it on 10.....simply amazing. All I needed was a 2x12 cab and I was ready to rock. If I can finally get the D120's into a 2x12, I'll have some smokin Duane tone!

Good quality leads & patch cables.

You can spend hundreds on upgrades/guitars and then use cheap leads. Buy a good decent set of leads and patch cables they will last you and will probably be the last thing you will sell - guitars/pups/amps etc will all come and go.

Remember a decent set of leads/cables is for life!!:saeek:

Re: Most underrated piece of gear?

A bone nut. And for acoustic, a bone nut and saddle. The only thing better is ivory if you can find it.

Re: Most underrated piece of gear?

Strings. A bad set if strings (or string construction mismatchd to the timbre of the guitar or musical style) can make even the best guitar impossible to play.

Re: Most underrated piece of gear?

Your ears! Can't make music without them. Just how many of you wear earplugs everytime you crank it up?

what are earplugs? ;)

hands are pretty underrated. without them you couldn't play guitar, and your hands will make almost any guitar sound like you... unless you use EMG's, then you sound like someone with EMG's :fing25:

hey now, don't hate. EMG's are good at what they do :D

Now tell me if I'm off-centre here, call me mad if you will, but I'm starting to form this crazy idea that you're not a huge fan of EMGs :laugh2:

Re: Most underrated piece of gear?

Yeah. I would have to agree that the musician himself is the most underestimated peice of the equation. Everyone who talks about musicians immediately starts on the "Well this guy uses this" subject. We spend too much time saying the musician wouldnt be where he is without his tone, that he gets from his equipment. But its really the other way around, The gear would be rotting on a music store shelf with no one to play it. Doesnt matter how much you spend on your equipment, a good player using a one hundred dollar guitar will sound infinitely better than a slopply player with a $5000 Gibson. Thats why I respect a person who can make beautifull sounds from an Accoustic guitar.

Volume: One of the most important aspects of playing is to know when volume is needed and when it is not!!

Reverb is my second choice of necessities in my playing. Al else is window dressing!

Re: Most underrated piece of gear?

I thought we were talking about gear here?

It is a given that you have to have ears and hands otherwise you would not be a guitar player - so get back on track guys!! :cool3:

I plugged my 57ri strat into mine and dimed it at my birthday party jam last may, and for about half an hour I thought I was Jeff Beck.

I plug my mesa recto 2x12 with v30s (and back removed) into the main speaker jack, and it sounds great. At rehearsal, I do the same with a 900 series 1960 Marshall cab with the side handles removed to act as ports. Sounds even better. Both cabs are an ohmage mismatch (8 ohm cabs for a 4 ohm load), but my experience with using 4 ohm cabs is that the 8m ohm cabs sound better.

Learn to transpose by ear and you never have to worry about where you capo is...

I don't use a capo much, probably because I don't have any problems transposing, but they DO come in handy if you're having to play songs with certain required fingerings (try playing "Landslide" in the key of Eb using a C-chord fingering without a capo). They definitely have their place.

Re: Most underrated piece of gear?

I don't consider my hands and ears to be gear, and a set up is a crucial part of service and maintenance, so I'll leave those out of this discussion. I would say that the most *underrated* pieces of gear are strings, picks, and a tuner (at least a tuning fork or pitch pipe). The former two items have a big impact on tone at a very small price, while the last item is crucial for those of us who lack innate perfect pitch.

As for more obvious pieces of equipment, I think certain Fender amps (e.g., nonreverb models) and guitars are actually underrated, along with various models from other manufacturers (e.g., Guild, Orange).
