Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

i have rg870qmz, Amrcn Basswood/quilted maple, Maple/wallnut 5pc neck
I just order Dmrz d act bridge, and dont know what kind of SD pup for my neck that can match my d act
SD pup mostly have high treble except Invader i think, so i need some warm crushing brutal metal sound from it include djent
so what SD pup(bridge for neck) that suit for my sound? or choose dimarzio(bridge for neck) too for my neck?
sorry im newbie here, hope i can learn a lot from this forum:wave:

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

Welcome to the forum. The Sentient is a warm neck humbucker designed for metal.

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

Sentient and the Pegasus were designed to warm up overly bright guitars, popular in the djent movement. It may have been the stylings of these guitars, but however it happened, maple boards took off in a huge way with the young metal crowd.

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

so maybe i will use pegasus for neck pos, i use my single coil to clean up my tone and coil split, so i build my guitar bridge for lead and neck for rhythm, and middle for clean, then coil split
maybe another option...? so i can make a research to choose them
yeah thx, get more school activity. so, sorry if slow response

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

The Sentient/Pegasus combo is good split, too, which you can do with a push/pull. I don't know if I would decribe any metal pickup these days as 'warm' (not compared to say, an Alnico II Pro or Invader), but the Sentient/Pegasus is my favorite, versatile combo for metal, though.

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

warm and brutal metal seem total opposites for me. for djent rhythms dont most people use the bridge pup?

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

Why not just use the D-Activator set? The neck pickup is certainly warmer than the bridge.

Listen to the Juggernaut from Bare Knuckle Pickups too. To my ear it's going to do what you want it to.

yeah but idk why tonezone and SuperDist get more popular on neck posisition, i just heard that sounds pretty good to me

BKP is Amazing pup, but cant afford the price

Dimarzio site show that D act neck eq T:8 M:5 B:4
the output of d act neck is 385, so can i use crunchlab 410 a little bit higher output than d act neck. is that okay? or it will destroy my tone?

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

You've got to remember that the neck position has a lot more bass and output than the bridge, that is why a lot of the pickups designed for the neck are EQ'd like this to compensate so you don't get a big boomy loose tone. Also you may have balance issues in volume if you use a high output neck pickup, because there is so much more string energy above it.

People use the air norton in the neck a lot, even though it was originally designed as a bridge pickup, if you're worried about having too much treble maybe check that out.

This is very true. I'd once used a DMZ combo, X2N in bridge & Super Dist in neck. The X2N reads 510 & Super Dist reads 435. At the same volume setting, the Super Dist virtually engulfs the X2N both in terms of volume & tone.
I had to actually lower the neck volume to abt 7 to get a nice balance.

it can cause the neck pup can overpower the bridge, d act neck is 385, so i worry about volumedrop when i switch it if i set lower output pup than d act neck, and about overpower the bridge if i set a higher pup.

Wow, cool the X2N, yeah thats the prob, the neck can be louder than bridge. is your X2N sounds massive and more compress?
i can choose Norton 352mV(not air), Dominion 360 mV, Transition 390 mV, Steve's Special 390 mV
i dont know how to read SD output meter.
maybe pickup height adjustment can solve the prob
I use Edge trem on my ibby, Should i get F or standard Space?

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

The X2N does sound compress and very edgy kind of crunch. But not massive, more like a shredders screamer kinda of sound.
It's not entirely warm brutal sound you'd expect for metal sound from X2N. But the Super Dist does !!
Only problem is that Super Dist is too loud & covers more bandwidth than X2N.

You would be better off with an F spaced to go with that Edge. Standard space is too narrow to align the strings gap over pickups pole pieces. Unless it is a strip, rail or similar types of pups, trem guitars will be better aligned with F spaced pole pups.

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

It's ok to have a neck pup at abt 100-150mV lower than the bridge pup. The volume will be abt the same.
But do take note of these factor too - pickup bandwidth. Two pickups may have the same output but if one has too wide a bandwidth than the other, the wider bandwidth may sound louder.

okay so the other prob is pup bandwidth, its hard to find about pup bandwidth

Something like this might help, too:
i already seen it again and again, from video i cant choose 59 custom/hybrid and Alt 8, but i cant get the sound as same as in the video, but its depend on guitar material
my guitar tone was neutral in acousticaly, so i can build my own tone

Re: Most Warm Brutal Metal SD pup?

Yes, it's better to build a neutral sounding guitar. Bcoz I believe you would probably be cranking your guitar with heavy distortion effects. I did wrote in a thread abt heavy distortion. Too much drive & power in your pedals will actually kill the clean natural tone of your guitar. The pedal will create its own tone. The guitar original tone is somewhat 'curtained' with all that over-drived distortion. So it makes little difference with pup selection or configuration.
