If you could only have 4 pedals on the floor, no multi-effects (H9, Magic Stomp, iStomp) what would your signal chain look like? I think mine would be along the lines of -

Decibel 11 Dirt Clod, Moog MF-108M Cluster Flux, MXR Carbon Copy, Morley Vol/Wah

EDIT: let's assume you are using a clip-on tuner, if you want to use up a spot on the floor for a floor tuner that is up to you.

Maybe BYOC 5 knob compressor, SD 805 Overdrive, EH Small Stone Phaser, and Line 6 DL4.

I have 3 of the 4. This could change at any given time....LOL.

EHX Small Stone -> Xotic SP Compressor -> Boss BD-2 -> Amp
Amp Send -> SD Deja Vu Delay -> Amp return


If price was no limit, I'd replace the Small Stone with a Drybell Vibe Machine.

This is a great thread idea, Bruce. Thanks for posting it. Until people start breaking the criteria set out in the OP, it'll be interesting to read.

The pedal that affects my sound more than any other is my trusty old TU-2, so that's on the board.
As far as actual tone-shaping pedals, I can get by with three more:
1. Kit-built Klone that's become indispensable for hard-rock high-gain rhythm.
2. MXR ZW-44/GT-OD that has a switch installed to choose the board revision for solo boost/TS alternative.
3. EHX Canyon because my lousy effects loop won't cooperate with my Carbon Copy.

If the Grand Canyon is too multi for you, then I’ll just grab my old DD-3 out of the drawer and be perfectly happy.

Four? I need a tuner, so the Polytune. I need an overdrive, so the Klon KTR. I need a Delay so the Timeline, which also has a nice chorus. And I need Reverb so the Hall of Fame. I'd hate to be without my Dover Drive but I could live without it. Or I could keep the Dover Drive, get rid of the Polytune and go back to using a headstock tuner.

I saw a video the other day with the guy from JHS talking about the Klon KTR and he held his up and showed where the knobs were set on his. He said: 75% Drive, Tone at Noon and Volume wherever it needed to be set to, to match your clean tone when the pedal is off. That's exactly how I've been setting mine for years now.

I included the video. He talks about the Klon KTR at about the 3 minute mark.

It would be hard to ditch a phaser but I could probably get by with:

Dunlop 535Q Wah --> Homebrew Electronics Power Screamer w/ Fat Boost --> Vick Audio Tree of Life--> Homebrew Electronics Mimic Mock II Analog Delay

These are my most used pedals. It's likely a tie whether I use the wah more than a phaser but I have so many great phasers, I don't know if I could pick just one.

Fulltone Fulldrive 2 -> Wampler Pinnacle -> Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus -> EHX Deluxe Memory Man

For the real Mt. Rushmore I’d have some different choices.
