Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

In the 80's Lynch was one of my fave top 3 slingers. Very unique phrasing and style with lots of fire.

Those of you who know me know one of my fave projects is tone cloning legendary guitar tones... however, Lynch is one that
I have yet to research fully (but I'll get to that eventually).

Anyhoo... was YouTubin' the other day and came across a very informative vid (from Tone Talk channel) with Lynch, Dave Friedman (of Friedman amps) and a host.

To get to the point, Lynch states at around the 1:21 mark that the pickup he used for ULOK & BFTA was a hybrid between a Distortion & a PG.

And of course he mentioned just prior about the "Hunter" pickup.

For those of you who can dig it, check it out:

Re: Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

If I am not mistaken, the distortion he is referring to was made for him by MJ using a regular thickness ceramic magnet. I don't know if that same magnet made its way to the JB to become the "Dokkenbucker"

I could be mixing up things, it has been a while.

Re: Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

As an aside, this info collaborates masta c's info regarding the same pickup specs in the popular "Hunter" pickup thread here.

In other words, twice Geo. is stated as saying the hybrid pickup (used during Dokken's 80's heydays) is a mix of Distortion and PG. I think that's proof enough.

Forensics, man. Forensics.

Re: Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

Could you post a link to c's post? I try to keep on top of all of the Lynch talk around here, but there has been a lot of them recently, and a lot going on IRL too.

Re: Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

What's interesting is what he said in the older video I posted at that link about the actual Dokken pickup being ~12K resistance, is that one Distortion coil (~8.3K) and one Pearly Gates coil (~4.1K) mated together would actually be right in that range (~12.4K)!

Re: Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

Hmmm...I have several three-letter models including a DDJ and PGBJ

Now I am hungry for a PB&J

Re: Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

OK - that's a pretty cool clip.

Here is the thing...He describes it as a Kind of hybrid in one video with qualities, and here he says it is two coils. It could be a "Distortion wound/magnet" to have some "Qualities" of a PG, or an actual hybrid.

I don't think "The Hunter" is a hybrid from the little I have read, but I don't know. I will point out a MORE important statement a little later: Pickups are a 10% thing. I can put any pickup in this guitar and it sounds the same."

I maintain just slap a Distortion in there and go for it. Or get a regular Ceramic and put it in a Distortion or a JB.

Re: Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

Ace is correct. I can run the distortion in my maple Charvel into a boosted superlead and it is BFTA

Re: Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

So is this related at all? I can't find much information on the net.

https://www.hwaudio.co.uk/Product/ESP-LH-200F-Humbucker-Pickup-George-Lynch-Black-p434745

Outside of that seller's claims, there's nothing I can find that substantiates the LH-200F as a GL design. Also, this Japanese site says the LH-200F is an Alnico 3 pickup wound to 7.3K:

That same shop is selling the pickup on ebay UK too and marketing it as a Lynch pickup.

^--- I'm Assuming your Talking about a Paul ? which I dont care for the Mid Thickness like that

My Percentages would be like

Mystery Finger Mojo = 40%
Amp/FX = 30%
Pickup = 15%
Guitar = 15%

No Disrespect to Aceman - when it mattered Fingering was why record Deals were Signed BITD + Songs/ Vocals

Re: Mr. Lynch ULOK & BFTA Pickup

Nope - I have a V and a Strat with Distortions.

Your personal preferences aside....my point is If you are in the "Last 1% of Lynch-tone" club...great. But obviously even Lynch doesn't believe that the pickup is nearly as important as the Amp and guitar.

A Distortion is more than close enough to get you there, just like a 59 can put you on planet Van Halen.

He obviously believes it is important enough to spend significant time fiddling with, though. ;)

I Agree with That that's Why My % were Fingers and Amp 1st. ( Love V's + Hate most Pauls , the only one I ever liked I bought , a 79 or 80 Studio ) I'll tell U a secret , He Would go back home after a Show in 1975 and Tweak on Stuff if He Didn't like something that Night ( or Day) He's Always been that way ( Probly still does ) . Another thing , He Never really has coughed up how He's Really Set-up Anyway . This isn't from researching Him ~ it's from being there . He has Always Guarded these things very tight ( + Personal life ) ~ More than Most Anybody I've ever Known .

First off, I ****ing LOVE Lynch...tone, playing etc. But I find he isn't always the best at keeping his story straight in terms of what gear was on what record etc. AFAIK BFTA and such was an MJ distortion but who knows. Certainly sounds close enough to me, but I also don't have any maple bodied guitars, or Michael Wagner recording me so...
