Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

I have a bit of an issue I hope can get resolved. I have a Dean ML Undertaker w/ a Duncan Invader. I pipe it through a Peavey JSX and in the loop I run a Behringer parametric eq/feedback destroyer. The tone is nothing short of phenomenal but on the ultra high gain channel, at the end of my palm mutes I get a kind of muddy/farty sound. Is this just a product of having an all tube amp or is there something I can do about it? I used to have a tube pre-amp and a solid state power section and I dont think I had this problem then. HEEEELLLPPP!

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

Maybe be too much bass or gain dialed in?
I like using a tubescreamer in front of the amp to get tight palm mutes... never tested this on the JSX though

Marcel: Thank you for your reply! I tried the bass and gain thing to no avail. I also tried lowering the pickup. that helped a little but mostly it just weakened my pick attack and that sucks. The initial response on the mute is superb but at the end it sort of fizzles/farts/"muds out". Over all the tone is crushingly massive but the mud thing is peeing in my post toasties! The tone chart on the Invader is pretty bass heavy so should I try another pickup? I was thinking about a Livewire that I took out of a cheap pawn shop git-fiddle. Any other suggestions? Anyone??

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

Get rid of the Invader and get a Custom or Custom 5. Buy an overdrive pedal and use it just enough to tighten up the palm mutes.

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

Overdrive pedal to tighten up the tone, but ditch the Invader.

Also, what cabinet are you running?

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

I'm running it through an Ampeg 4/12. I'm looking for another cab to go with it. I also want to run the line out from the JSX (tone is badass) to a slave amp. Probably a solid state to add variety to the tone.

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

I also read in another forum that somebody suggested changing pre-amp tubes to 12AX7C's or the Sovtec brand and it would clean up the mud. Any truth to this?

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

No, try it with a different cabinet first. It's probably those crappy speakers farting out.

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

The speakers are cool as the clean is clear as a bell even at max volume (neck pickup, invader can't get clean tones unless I back off on guitar volume) I am wondering about Rivera cabs though. Are they good? Also wondering about Schecter. Never played one. Are they pretty sweet?

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

i'll have to go with DSS here...try a different cabinet. i don't know how many models of 4x12's ampeg makes, but if it's the same one i used to have then those speakers aren't exactly top notch.

i remember having problems with the low end being too muddy and flabby with that cabinet. i kept tweaking my settings to try and dial in a tone that would stay focused, but eventually kept getting worse until the speakers all started to devolop a real ugly rattle...

...then i bought the marshall.

Rivera = higher end Marshall cabinet, basically. I love it, but I'm going to change the grillcloth. It's a weird blue, and I want it black.

Schecters are the best bang for buck guitars, period. I sold a USA Jackson RR-1 for my C-7, and don't regret it at all.

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

Sounds like I need to acquire a different cab. Too bad I just spent my portion of my tax crap on a Takamine G-116 classical (damn the luck). I guess I'll have to talk to the cabinet fairy and maybe... just maybe...

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

What kind of cheese(ends, ducats,$, etc..) am I looking at for one of them there Rivera's

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

I snagged mine for 350 used, but they go for around a grand brand new. Average used price is about 450.

That said, I'd get something like a Mesa Traditional, 1960AV, Carvin Legacy, Framus Dragon, or some other higher end cabinet with V30's.

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

Are you sure it couldn't be about technique? Maybe your SS amp wasn't so keen on producing out everything you played clearly, and you hear them now with a better amp?

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

I think you should try an OD pedal first. That may cure 90% of the problem real quick, not to mention cheaper.

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

+ one on OD pedal
Usually if you come to your preamp with a lot of bass ( invader has some ! ) you get muddy basses , it is that simple .
The receipy is to clean your signal by cutting basses before the preamp , and the use of an OD Pedal like boss OD-1 ( for example ) , cause they cut a lot of basses and boost high mids .
Try that .

Re: Muddy palm mutes!!!!!!

Another vote for the OD pedal. A friend of mine runs an SD-1 into the front end of his Carvin Legacy head for just this reason - no added gain, just to cut low end mush.
