Mullards

Re: Mullards

Jeff, have you ever considered using the ECC832 in the V1 slot? This has really transformed my Studio 2! (Less concerned w the front end gain in my other amps)

Re: Mullards

Good to know... I was wondering about their EL84's... Now, I am wondering about how they'd compare to the new TungSols? The same factory no?

B :beerchug:

No idea about the Tungsol 84s, Doc. It is myunderstanding they are clearer/tighter/more modern toned, but I have not tried them.

Have not heard of that tube Ben, can you give me a rundown on what it is like?

On a side note regarding the Mullards, I dragged the Class5 out, popped a Mullard EL84 in, the original shugang back in v2, and the new mullard 12ax7 in V1, plugged her into the V30cab, let her warm up a bit.. and holy sheet....between the new 335 and the Mullards, it sounds so much better..great match of tubes...less headroom, but the distortion sound is really fun...clip next week.

50% ECC83, 50 % ECC82, 100% awesome!

The first triode is 83, so it retains the crunch of the first gain stage, and more importantly, the tone of your amp. The Sudio 2 was voiced around the 83 and itis ultra sensitive to valve swaps, so every time I tried to get the gain down, it was always with a tonal compromise.

The second triode is the 82, so it brings the gain back down again. The end result is YOUR tone, the tone your amp is designed around, but with manageable gain levels. I find them particularly useful with my single channel amps as it allows me to throw virtually any pedal in font of the amp now.

If you go to this thread, all of the crunch tones are with the Studio 2 with the 832 in the v1 slot, aside from the guitars at the vey end, that's the Dual Rec...

Re: Mullards

I can't stand JJ power tubes in anything. Preamp ok as in passable ok.

Re: Mullards

brand new III.. I'm trying to sell it as its just not my style

I wondered. Fender has been making the Blues Jr brighter every time they revise the amp. So, the BJr II is darker than the III and the I is darker than the II.

Mine is a BJr II.

Cool. Thanks. That's exactly my info as well... I am currently using a pair of JJEL84's (and have a pair of spares again JJEL84's) for my Blues Jr. They are not bad, but not great as well. And to be frank, I am not a fan of EL84's anyway... Still, I want to try them TungSol's or Mullards. I did not care for EHX's and the stock Groove Tubes.

Weird...

Mine is a MIA Blues Jr. 1998. Is it a Blues Jr. v. 0?

:)

Really... It got brighter when it moved across the border, and changed the color of the board from green to cream. But that wasn't enough I suppose... They are making it brighter and brighter... I think them testers at Fender should have lost their hearing you know. The first hearing loss concerns the highs, as far as I know.

Definitely give the Mullards a try, tonally much sweeter than the JJs. But headroom will be reduced. No clue yet how durable comparitively, wbich is the good thing about the JJs.

Yeah, who knows....

I've always liked things a little brighter, myself, so that's probably why my BJr II sounds dark to me.
