Multi-effects suck

Re: Multi-effects suck

I've been using my GT-6 for a long time. I've spent a lot of time tweaking, but anymore I just have a couple of go-to patches and can just play.

Re: Multi-effects suck

The only multi-effect pedal I've ever thought sounded very good is the Digitech Whammy DT. If that counts, anyway. I don't have experience with any of the more expensive ones, however.

Re: Multi-effects suck

They are just another tool in the box. Like you said a swiss army knife or even a leatherman would be a good analogy. They work for fun, playing with friends and even small events (when alcohol is involved) or just as a backup if everything goes bad. They are real easy to set up compared to a multi amp, large pedal board including switching, power supply and complete set up of knobs and placement.

Re: Multi-effects suck

Not only do they suck in application, but the very idea sucks IMHO. I don't see one shred of appeal in such a device.

Re: Multi-effects suck

I have a GP-100 which is like a rack mounted GT8...lots of stuff to tweak, and I love it. For my ambient stuff, there still aren't individual pedals that can do what it can do. I need *very* different chains of effects to be selected in an instant, and I don't have the real estate for that many pedals or faith in patch cables and power supplies to put a rig like that together. Just a midi controller, and I am set. I also use a Line6 M9 (and HD500) for regular band gigs and recording. The M9 is used with an amp, and the HD500 when we use IEMs.

Re: Multi-effects suck

Once again, I must qualify this by admitting to being in the "bedroom wanker" crowd, but having said that, I've never seen these things as being amp substitutes as much as being glorified EQ's. When I select "Blackface", on my Digitech RP2000, (or J-Station, for that matter), I don't expect it to sound exactly like a Fender Blackface. I just expect that general EQ setting. And in that regard, I'm never disappointed. To be able to select between Blackface, VOX AC30, Tweed, Rectifier, etc., is just to select those complex EQ's. Along with compression, gain, and "knob" compliment.

Btw, run your favorite multi-effects/modeler through a pair of KRK Rokit 5's . . . pure sonic nirvana.

(In the "bedroom", mind you.)

You can count the number of stompboxes in your rig on one hand, can't you?
