our bassist plays a six string warwick vampyre(that thing is sweet!) and it rocks. He uses all strings and has a really fat and powerfull bass sound. i say multistrings rock.

I have a 5 string stingray, and I play in an alt. rock/pop band and in a lot of blues bands, and I'm telling you, having that low D and Eb have really opened up a lot of options when playing the blues..also having a good closed position grip for blues songs in E has been great...my Ernie Ball is GREAT for that low 5 action....plays amazingly, had a very little transition curve, and the B is nice a thick sounding, without being overly muddy

I own a 4 string, and it´s enuogh for most applications.

But sometimes I really miss the extra range of a 5 or a 6 string, especially when playing with people that downtune.

And I´m seriously considering picking up Armotron´s 8 string Galveston, just a cash problem

It´s all about chording and melodic possibliities. I personally often miss some of the things I can do on a 5 or 6 string when I´m playing the 4 (like holding a groove down on the b while "spacing it" up on the upper registers), but for "locking in the groove" 4 is enough.

Hey, this really makes me think....did I make a mistake in buying a 4 string bass?

I was just watching my only bass instructional video (Jaco's) and he seems to manage ok with 4 strings....

Playability > 6 string bass.

Thats where I stand, Im netural as to whether or not a 5th string is nessary tho.
It depends on the skill level and the bass's quality.

Can you explain how skill level influences the choice?

thanks.

I have one tuned EADGbe -1 octave from a guitar.

Less moving up and down the neck.
I can slap MOORE easily on 'guitar' spacing, as well so this instrument suits me perfectly.

wow. that unusual, isn't it? So you can live without the low B? ;)

(which string gauges do you use?)
